iPod lead - Range Rover Sport 2008 TDV8.

Hi all,

I have a 2008 RRS and in the upper glovebox there is a USB port which I can connect my ipod to.

I don't have the required lead so I'm going to order it from Land Rover (at a cost of £60!!).

My question is, does anyone have their iPod connected in this way to the 2008 model like mine and if so what sort of interface do you get? Can you control the iPod in full from the touch screen and the steering wheel?

Thanks,

Jon

You have got the ACM - the USB port is not where you connect the iPod to, there should be a separate lead for that.

If don't have the iPod cable, it should cost you nearer £15 not £60 - it sounds like the dealer is trying to sell you the 2010 or 2011 model year cable.

See here for the ACM iPod cable details: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic44862.html

You don't get touch screen control, you get next/previous track from the steering wheel only I believe. Like this site? Buy some RRSPORT goodies to show your support!

What is ACM?

In the upper glove box there is either an AUX stereo input or a USB port (I have the TDV8 RRS if that makes any difference).

I rang the Land Rover dealer and they told me the USB is where the ipod connects and the lead to do so is £47 + VAT.

I tried using the standard apple USB cable that I would link my ipod to my PC with but nothing happened. The dealer thinks the ipod will be able to be controlled from the touch screen as well as the steering wheel but when I go to the touch screen at present I don't have any audio options....

Thanks,

Jonathan

ACM = Audio Connectivity Module

The dealer you spoke to are WRONG, the USB port is not for connecting up the iPod, whatever lead they order for you at that price will be WRONG. Also you won't get control via the touchscreen.

They are, shamefully, confusing the pre-2010 and post 2010 iPod connectivity, and giving you duff information.

The iPod cable which is missing or you've not found yet connects to main ACM interface box, not the USB port, and is the one I linked to on the DISCO3 site.

The other option is that you have, somewhere, an iPod cradle fitted - this is was discontinued after a year or so and replaced with a flying cable.

Here is the manual for the ACM, showing the iPod cradle (which as above was discontinued) but the rest of the information is valid:

Ah. It all makes sense now. When I got the car it had an ipod cradle but I had it removed as it was right next to the steering wheel and I didn't like that. As I saw the USB connection in the glove-box I assumed I could plug my iPod into that so no issue (idiot I know).

So now what I suppose I need to do is get a car audio place or alike to order me the cable with an ipod connection on one end and the ACM interface on the other (just like the photo in the link you posted Martin) and run it in for me so the ipod end pops out in the glove box as it should do.

Am I correct in my thinking above?

One thing Martin, what is a 'flying cable'?

Last question, once all the above is done will I just be able to control simple functions from the steering wheel/head unit and should I have a USB or iPod interface near or on the central arm rest that I just can't find?

Thanks all,

Jon

Hi Jon,

Yes, order that updated ACM cable and have it routed to near the other connections for the ACM if that's what you want. You could also have it routed to the armrest I suppose if that's what you wanted!

What I meant by flying cable is one with just a connector on each end, rather than a cradle on one end, etc. So in this case, take it to mean the updated ACM cable.

There's no additional iPod interface that you're missing, central armrest iPod kit is from the 2010 onwards RRS. These later models also have updated audio systems with improved integration, but not retrofittable to earlier cars I'm afraid.

You will have basic control from the steering wheel, yes. The manual I linked to gives all the details of operation. Like this site? Buy some RRSPORT goodies to show your support!

But before you order, I would double-check that you can connect the cable to the ACM - i.e. find the ACM main box and find the spare connection.[/img] Like this site? Buy some RRSPORT goodies to show your support!
