Engine management failure, system shutdown!!!

Anyone had and issue with the engine management? Fault showing as 'engine management failure, system shutdown' car goes into get me home mode for a short period before power returns! Had to pull over the 1st time and turn the engine off and on again to clear. Worryingly happened today midst overtaking a lorry on a single lane country road Shocked

Will book in with a specialist tomorrow but wondered if anyone had come across this before? Range Rover Sport HSE and for a bit of weekend fun a S1 Lotus Elise with a few track biased additions!

Have been to a specialist this morning to try and sort the issue. Fault code came up as PO299-00 turbo under boost.

Looking at issues with the TDV6 i'm down to 4 possible problems;

Variable vanes located internally within the turbo sticking (likely and expensive)
External rod controlling the variable vanes sticking
Split hose on turbo
Split hose on intercooler

Unfortunately the garage cannot be sure which one of these it is. The other problem is that the turbo replacement requires the chassis out Shocked which i cant imagine will bew cheap!!!! Range Rover Sport HSE and for a bit of weekend fun a S1 Lotus Elise with a few track biased additions!

Not sure if this is at all helpful Sam but we have had a very similar problem with two of our John Deere tractors this year. Lots of error codes and engine power being de-rated messages (the tractor version of limp home mode I guess). It turned out to be the variable vanes sticking in the turbos, now I am not sure if you can even get to the turbo on the sport, or even if you would want to, but our problem was 'cured' by a bloody good dose of WD40 sprayed in the (cold) turbo while the external rod was moved backwards and forwards. I hasten to add that this 'fix' was carried out by the dealership and not by me and to be honest I half expect the problem to come back again. 12MY RRS Orkney Grey HSE Lux

Cheers Dazzagt, more annoyed that it occurred once I spent the last month colour coding and refurbing wheels and having the paintwork sorted!

Half sure it is the variable vanes causing the problem. Unfortunately it's a turbo replacement which means chassis off Shocked Heard quotes of £4500 to sort!! But sure I'll find somewhere/someone a lot more reasonable in time (I hope)!

The indy reckons I should give it a couple of weeks of booting it around and hope they simply free up under there own steam, fingers crossed! Range Rover Sport HSE and for a bit of weekend fun a S1 Lotus Elise with a few track biased additions!

Problem continued (car went into limp mode 5 times on a trip to Norfolk from Kent) so dropped it off last Friday to AHL Engineering, Maidstone for a fault finding excercise. Turned out it was an inter cooler issue. Had been damaged at some point. Replacement £120! A damn site less than the £2k to £4k it could have cost to change the turbo!!

Fingers crossed this is the end of it! Have to say been very impressed by AHL, really enthusiastic and knowledgable. Thumbs Up Range Rover Sport HSE and for a bit of weekend fun a S1 Lotus Elise with a few track biased additions!

Do yourself favour and go over to the D3 site as this is a common problem over there, no need to take the body off and someone will advise of a place to have your car fixed.

Malaysia 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Chawton White

You're right - P029900 Turbocharger/Supercharger Underboost Condition.

It could be just a simple air leakage, post turbocharger.

Could also be Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor circuit high resistance OR
MAP sensor circuit short circuit to ground OR
MAP sensor circuit short circuit to power.

Would be prudent to check for DTCs indicating EGR or VGT actuator faults. Malaysia Boleh!

Russia

In Russia, a lot of cars with the problem of turbine engine 3.6 liters. Of practice should be that the car can not stand without moving for over a week. As soon as the car stood for more than there is a problem - LIMITATION OF DUTY - ENGINE failed. Often have to change both the turbine. Replacement is the removal of the body from the chassis. The cost of repairs 4000-4500 pounds.

Turned out that the turbo was ok, had the MAP sensor cleaned first, still faults showing. Then engine management reprogrammed with the latest software, again fault appearing after a run. Finally had the engine tray removed and on investigation found that the inter cooler was damaged.

Now replaced part cost only £120!

The advice from most specialists/dealers is that it's easier and as quick to take the body off to do a turbo replacement. It's said you can get to the turbo through the off side wheel arch but some I spoke to said this makes the job a pita! Land Rover quote 5.8hrs for body removal (forgot to ask if that included putting it back on again!) and indipendants I spoke to were talking in the £2k range all in. Turbo Technics did however quote £650 to recondition a turbo, but apparently the sensor/switchgear on the top is also known to fail and cannot be purchased seperatly from the turbo, so it could be that you'd pay in the region of £1k fitting and £650 for a reconditioning of your turbo and the problems still there!!

Anyway I'm very thankful mine was easily(ish) resolved, car drives miles better even with having an old remap wiped off! Thumbs Up Range Rover Sport HSE and for a bit of weekend fun a S1 Lotus Elise with a few track biased additions!
