Had my rack fitted both ways and as you say apart from the appearance there isn't much difference in noice, stability etc. Removing the rack isn't so easy and I would suggest the rails as your fixing point. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Its actually an aluminum gutter insert.. its the 2 long black strips that sit on top of the roof with 6 plastic round covers holding it in place. |
