Used to do Stirling/Lymington/Stirling regularly in my 2.7Tdv6 sat on the cruise set at 70/2200rpm and worked on 31.4mpg coming south and 29.9 going north, that's the average of the average of 6 round trips, always with the aircon on auto and with the occasional little blast to 80-85 to get passed slower traffic. If there are strong south westerly winds blowing then you will get better MPG coming north (it's also all up hill from Liverpool to Shap) than going south into them too - do not mock, on a long drive like that the wind strength has a considerable bearing on your fuel consumption.

allow 50p per mile. That's for fuel, insurance, tax, tyres, brakes, service (pro rata). Double it to 100p for depreciation

Oh man, Musher, you will be driving some of the very best touring roads in Europe.................. irespsective of the weather too, it is all spectacular scenery once you are north of Lancaster and I can think of so many side routes you could take if you weren't in a hurry! There is, by the way, no way you will be able to drive Portsmouth to Ullapool in 10 hours, I would say minimum would be 13 hours and that would be pushing it.

I would go Glasgow, loch lomond, crainlarich, rannoch moor, glencoe, to fort William. Much nicer drive in my opinion. And as Tim says 10 hours is not enough. When I came back I passed through Fort Augustus dead on 12 and arrived home at 10pm. I would allow a good 13 hours as suggested. 2017 Range Rover Sport Autobiography |

Watch out for the hidden camera vans on the side of bridges once you get north of Preston if you creep over the speed limit. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

In Scotland the Police must publish what locations mobile speed cameras will be working in for the following week. Probably worth while checking before you leave. Here is the link to Strathclyde Police locations. http://www.strathclydecameras.com/Camera-L...ctive-Map/ and here is the one for the Highlands (Northern Constabulary) http://www.nscp.co.uk/site/news/.
