2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
long trip to Scotland

Guy's,

I have to travel to Scotland for a family funeral next week and considering taking the beast instead of the wife's mini cooper s. Having never taken the RRS on such a long run before, I have no idea how much it would cost me in fuel.

I will have 656 miles each way to travel, most of which will be on Motorways and duel carriageways. Working on a average speed of 65-70 MPH for better fuel consumption, would any of you out there be able to tell me what sort of miles per gallon I would get and how much roughly on today's currant fuel prices it would cost me?

Almost forgot to say I have a 2.7TD6.

Many thanks Confused Confused

Used to do Stirling/Lymington/Stirling regularly in my 2.7Tdv6 sat on the cruise set at 70/2200rpm and worked on 31.4mpg coming south and 29.9 going north, that's the average of the average of 6 round trips, always with the aircon on auto and with the occasional little blast to 80-85 to get passed slower traffic. If there are strong south westerly winds blowing then you will get better MPG coming north (it's also all up hill from Liverpool to Shap) than going south into them too - do not mock, on a long drive like that the wind strength has a considerable bearing on your fuel consumption.

Edit - recommendations - I used to leave Lymington about 10am drive up to the M40 and take a break and lunch at J13 - Gaydon. Take a drive up to the British Motor Heritage Centre and park in the small upper car park for the conference centre and enter via the doors at the upper level - you don't have to pay entry to the museum that way but can use their toilets and the cafe which is good value compared to the Warwick Services just up the motorway. Fuel at the Gaydon Esso station is usually cheaper than up at the services and I would fill up there and know I could get all the way home and not need to worry about refuelling for a couple of days after. If it was a good run north I would arrive home about 6:30pm, I'm 16 miles west of Stirling on the road to Loch Lomond

Next stops would be Stafford or Knutsford servcies and then i would drive straight up to TeBay Services and take a break there before driving straight through to Stirling.
You don't say where you are going on to as Lymington to Stirling is 490 miles so you must be headed further north to be doing 650 miles each way. I also assume that there will be 2 of you to share the driving........... most of my trips were solo hence the more frequents stops than some would do. If you come up to Stirling and need to refuel then there is a Sainsbury about 1/2 mile from J10 on the M9. If you are going up to the West coast then at the moment you have a clear run up the west side of Loch Lomond as far as Tarbert - after there the road has recently been closed some days while they repair damage resulting from a lorry and coach meeting heading on on one of the very tight bends. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim

many thanks for the info. I'm travelling up to Ullapool so as you can see it's a bit further North than Stirling. Never done the trip before quite looking forward to it to be honest.

My aim is to leave Portsmouth at 0630 and take it from there. Been told to expect at least a 10 hour drive, depending on trtaffice and road works if any.

Going to be travelling with the wife and although she drives, reluctant to let her drive my car as I enjoy driving the RRS so much.

I've worked it out to be around about £130 each way in fuel costs, working on an average of 30 MPG although I'm sure someone on here will say differently!!

Does this sound about right to you?

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Oh man, Musher, you will be driving some of the very best touring roads in Europe.................. irespsective of the weather too, it is all spectacular scenery once you are north of Lancaster and I can think of so many side routes you could take if you weren't in a hurry! There is, by the way, no way you will be able to drive Portsmouth to Ullapool in 10 hours, I would say minimum would be 13 hours and that would be pushing it.

I can really recommend that if you are not in a massive hurry that you take the circuit route - go north by the A9 and Inverness and come back the long way via Fort William and Glencoe. The return route Ullapool to Fort William was rated by the guys at Top Gear as one of the best drives in Europe

The good bits :-
The Lancashire/Cumberland/Northumberland sections of the M6,
The M74 to Glasgow
The A9 from Perth Northwards if there are no road works
The A835 Inverness to Ullapool
The A87 Kyle of Lochalsh to The Great Glen/ Loch Ness
The A82 Fort William to Glasgow via Glencoe and the west side of Loch Lomond
These are roads that the RRS could have been designed to drive on - only a FFRR would be better or D4 as good to travel in!

What you mustn't forget is that Scotland is a huge unpopulated place out of the Central Belt, the distances to drive are huge
and I think you have underestimated your driving time by at least 6 hours as it is tourist time and the roads will be conjested with coaches and caravans! This is not a day's drive, once you have got to Glasgow you are only half way there! I would highly recommend that you set out a day earlier and stop overnight either at Stirling or Teebay Services in Cumberland - then as the main driver you too can enjoy the drive 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I would go Glasgow, loch lomond, crainlarich, rannoch moor, glencoe, to fort William. Much nicer drive in my opinion. And as Tim says 10 hours is not enough. When I came back I passed through Fort Augustus dead on 12 and arrived home at 10pm. I would allow a good 13 hours as suggested. 2017 Range Rover Sport Autobiography

Ive just been up to glasgow from south west cornwall..8 hours at exactly 70mph on cruise control

once youve passed glasgow it can be a bit heavier going depending on traffic.....Id recmmend taking the RRS though..youll be far more comfortable and relaxed to be honest

Sorry to hear you are having to make the trip in such sad circumstances!
If only you could trailer the cooper up and do the last 50 miles in it! I doubt you would get any more mpg using it, so just use the RRS, and arrive fresh, as the road across to Ullapool is a nightmare at the best of times, at least the high seating position should allow you to see tourists coming at you in the middle of the road! MY10 TDV6 SE (debadged Wink ), Santorini Black, Flappy paddles, Privacy Glass, 20" Stormers, Mudflaps!

In Scotland the Police must publish what locations mobile speed cameras will be working in for the following week. Probably worth while checking before you leave. Here is the link to Strathclyde Police locations. http://www.strathclydecameras.com/Camera-L...ctive-Map/ and here is the one for the Highlands (Northern Constabulary) http://www.nscp.co.uk/site/news/.

Hope this helps. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black
