I either put it in P or put it in N and apply the handbrake, don't put it in N then leave your foot on the brake, it will eventually burn out the solenoid that recognizes you have put it in N

By doing that andy i feel that one is working against the other, and over a period of time that can't be good.

Gearbox oil temperature will rise if its in-gear and stationary for more than 10 minutes. Stick it in neutral, put hand brake on if its going to be a few minutes.

Cant see the oil temp rising causing a problem, i bet the oil gets a whole lot hotter when your off road up steep inclines under a far bigger load/stress.
I just sit there with my foot on the brake blinding the driver behind with my brake lights.

DRDILL.

As a Devonian and an ex-Loughborough Uni. Auto-Engineer I'm alway going to be sceptical of pixie, (even with Leicestershire origins) opinions across the Tamar !

In this case you're mistaking the situation of being in traffic with the torque convertor churning the transmission fluid because its in-gear, engine revs are close to idle so airflow over all the radiators is relatively low.

But in low range the engine revs are higher water flow and oil flows are higher, airflow from the fans are good and the torque convertor churn is much lower as gears are revolving not stationary.

You're in a Range Rover for God's sake, push the other traffic out of the way and never stop at traffic lights! That will keep the oil cooler. Mr. Green SDV6 HSE Sport2 - Santorini Black, Ebony Interior, Pano Roof, Things I haven't found yet!
