Adaptive Headlights not dancing

Picked up my 2005 RRS SC today. Just tried the headlights once it has got dark and they're not swivelling on start-up. I had them on my 2007 RRS TDV8 and was a feature I really liked. I think all the Supercharged models are supposed to have them - does any one know and if there are any common faults?

That's the Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS).
This system includes the dynamic headlamp leveling system which is controlled by actuator motors which rotate the projector module on its vertical and horizontal axes to adjust the beam output.

The "dancing" part is actually the "Initialisation Procedure". When the AFS control module receives an ignition on signal, the control module performs the initialisation procedure which ensures that the headlamps are correctly aligned on both their vertical and horizontal axes.

If there is a failure of the AFS system, a warning indicator in the instrument cluster is illuminated to warn the driver.

Simple test: On a dark night, park your vehicle facing a wall; turn the headlight rotary control all the way to "AUTO" and start the engine. Watch the lights against the wall - you will see the "dance" almost immediately! Cool Malaysia Boleh!

Thanks Bobby. The test you suggested is exactly what I had done last night before posting.

From what I recall, my previous TDV8 would self-calibrate most times, but possibly not if I parked-up and then restarted within a short period.

Your comment on warning lights has led me to look back to the Owners Handbook and happily my vehicle has the AFS warning light which illuminates on ignition and then switches off so I'm comfortable that the car has the AFS fitted.

Still no dance this morning though.

As an FYI, I do have an amber engine warning lamp on. The dealer is collecting next week to sort out and believes its the lambda sensor. Apparently they replaced one after the PDI but only one as that was all they had in stock at the time - I know the engine warning lamp can light for many reasons, and I'm assuming that the AFS would have nothing to do with it. Disappointing in any case.

Yes, engine warning light should not be related to this although the AFS could be affected if there is a problem with the suspension system.

Other reasons could be blown fuse, leveling motor/linkage fault or there could be a fault in the headlamp leveling circuit.

Hopefully the dealer will correct this. Malaysia Boleh!

I've thought to myself that perhaps the lights only go through the calibration routine if the car has been moved? On Saturday Id started the engine a couple of times without looking at the lights and then when I was looking for the 'dance' in the evening, I hadn't driven anywhere. Will check once it gets dark tonight.

I am experiencing something very similar, only that one side does not dance.

Did you ever solve the issue? Thanks.

Yes, but I don't think it's the same issue if you have one side working.

I had to change the AFS ECU located behind the CJB. It was a pain to get to and the right (newer) ECU doesn't come up on eBay very often, but once I swapped it out, they've worked fine since.

Thanks - and yes still having the intermittent fault. It seems if I switch on the lights whilst the car is not level (i.e. on a slope) both sides work fine. Which leads me to think that a level sensor could be sticky and needs free-ing up.

Whats the part number for the AFS ECU you changed? Thanks.

My AFS is not dancing either. I've found this part number 5DF008704-70 but haven't changed yet.
Has anyone else also changed this?

Mine don't dance either. was it a standard feature on all cars? Mines a 55 plate. I'm guessing it was as there's no manual option.

I have the same problem, my lights are not dancing.
The ECU can be a problem. t is located behind the "CJB" according Robmeister1969.
What is the CJB?
Has anyone any ide how to check other reasons for the problem?

The CJB is the Central Junction Box and is behind the lower glovebox - you have to drop the glovebox down and release the sides to get to it. The BJB the Battery Junction Box is next to the battery in the engine bay. Thumbs Up

The CJB is referred to as the passenger compartment fusebox in the owner's manual. The BJB is referred to as the engine compartment fuse box in the manual. This is designed to ensure that owners are thoroughly confused by the whole thing. Rolling with laughter

And people wonder why Land Rover has a bad reputation for electrical reliability... Whistle 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Best regards and all.
