E46 M3 to RRSport?

Hi guys,

Great forum. I was just wondering if i could ask a few things about the rrs?
I currently have an 04 e46 M3 which i love with baby seat in rear. I also have company car which is a newfocus econetic.
My previous cars were a boxster s, standard boxster, z3..etc.
There will probably be another child in the near future and while both cars can handle the baby seats and luggage etc. The rrs seems a bit more user friendly if i want to take the whole family out in style.
The M3 is very thirsty and does 18mpg. I still have not test drove any rrs yet but have heard to stay clear from the 2.7..why is this? Also what are the main problems that arise in these cars and what are the main things to look out for?
The supercharged version might be off limits so what are the prices for an 05-06 plate?
Whatever happens i am happy to stay with the M3 but im just seeing what the running costs would be for an rrs.

Thank you.

I came from an E92 M3 and very happy with the RRS Very Happy

I, like you now have children, and come from a long list of performance cars, an E46 M3 CSL, Porsche 911 and E60 M5 to name but a few I was worried about how I'd like it. I went for the V8 diesel HST and cannot recommend it enough!

It's no drag racer, but from 50mph onwards it can really shift! I drive pedal to the metal most days and get around 20mpg so not bad, in the M5 I was getting 8mpg Big Cry

I'd steer clear of the 2.7, it's very sluggish and economy isn't much better from what I saw when looking. Look at my owners thread if you want to see the HST, in my opinion it's THE model to get Thumbs Up

Thanks for quick reply. I suppose speed was not going to the biggest thing compared to the M3 but love the look of the rrs. What are the service maintenance costs? Do you use specialist or dealer? If you are buying used what to lool out for?Any regrets? Csl is lovely.

CSL was great, had it for 2 years, but sold it for a 911 and regretted it every day Big Cry

Servicing is a breath of fresh air compared to BMW, I had the annual service done last month at a cost of £300 including brake fluid change Mr. Green

I will stick with the dealer as I have warranty but a lot of people don't. I do circa 6k a year so I dint mind running costs on prestige really.

now is a very good time to buy as the RRS fetches strong money in the Winter months. Lots of info on here regarding niggles etc but take most with a pinch of salt. Get the best spec you can, mine has rear tv's with a PS3 fitted Cool

Budget Will be around the 20k I would think for what you asked give a take, don't be put off a 2.7 mines plenty quick enough and speed isn't what you really buy a 2.5T vehicle for Wink I've found myself driving everywhere a lot slower since I got the car. It's a nice place to be cruising around. Thumbs Up

A remapped 2.7 could give you a bit more go maybe?

Running the m3 is ridiculous so anything that beats 18.2mpg would be great. I didnt know you could remap the 2.7.
I can see rrs starying from 16k to 25k on autotrader and some of the low ones are the supercharged versions. I take it the rrs doesnt handle high mileage well or is down to individual. Also are the engine sizes 2.7, 3.0, 4.2 or is there more in the range?

There is also the excellent v8 diesel. A nice compromise between the 2.7 oil burner and the 4.2 sc. FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

I have also gone from the e46 M3 (albeit via the twin-turbo X6 when it came out as we wanted load space but it didn't last long!) to the RRS. The RRS was something Iwe'dlooked at for a while and took the plunge after getting rid of the X6.

Absolutely love it and can't see myself changing our 'big car' brand for a long time now. Like mrfixit says above, don't necessarily be put off the 2.7 though if speed isn't a prime requirement, which it really isn't with the RRS' weight, but coming from the M3 you're going to know that....I certainly did, but it doesn't bother me at all. In truth it's quite a nice change from the M3 driving style you adopt! You find yourself in not so much of a rush to get places.

Re. servicing - I agree with Gilford and its nothing compared to BMW, and you'll notice a real (big) difference compared to the M3, akthogh that will depend on which RRS you go for in the end.

I think most of the guys on here would also say to try and go through a dealer if possible, but its not the be all and end all.

Whatever you end up doing, good luck and happy RRS hunting....you'll not regret it. Thumbs Up

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Santorini Black

I'm about to change my lovely XKR Cab and e46 330 Sport Tourer for an RRS SC and a Boxster S. I used to have a TDV8 which I loved and which had great mid range performance and I also loved the 'snarl' of the engine. I do relatively low mileage and therefore an older SC seems to make more sense for me, and it feels at £20kish that the depreciation curve should be flattening off. Funnily enough as I wait to change the cars over later this week, it's the RRS rather than the Boxster that I'm most looking forward to getting in to, and I've spent hours reviewing this forum! Also I like the fact that there are lots of subtle styling tweaks that I can make to stay interested - interior leds, led rear lights, clear side lights, chrome mirrors, etc....

I went from the FFRR 3.6 to the 3.0 Confused

Dont be put off at all at a 2,7. ADY555 had one and has just had it remapped and its certainly brought a bit of magic and sparkle to his right foot !

I think Id rather have my little boy sat in the back of the land rover product any day. Feels really safe. However still enough poke in it to be able to put my foot down and still be satisfied on the speed. Even at 3.0.

Mrfixit is true in what he says about cruising...
