How do you tell if lights are on in auto lights mode?

This may be a stupid question but how do can you tell if your headlights are on when in auto light mode. I always have my lights set to auto mode but cannot easily tell if they are on or not especially when it is cloudy and raining. I have checked a few times when i thought they would be on as it was so overcast and wet and they weren't so put them on manually. I thought there should be some indication on the dashboard display that they are on but have not seen anything. How dark does it have to get before they come on?

The standard green colour light (the same as when you put the lights on manually) lights up on the dashboard everytime lights are activated automatically. Vadim A.

The RRS auto lights are one of the last ones on the road to light up, look for reflections on the car infront of you that usually lets you know if they are on or not Thumbs Up

I will have to check when i get home as I am sure that no green light comes on when the lights are actually on. In the right light I can see that the dials light up but mostly its quite difficult to tell if they have or not.
I have resorted to looking at the car in front to see if there are refelctions but thats not always possible to do.

There is a little dial just below the light switch, have you tried adjusting that? It allows you to brighten or dim the instrument lights Thumbs Up

The light indicator light didn't come in until MY09 / 58 ish IIRC - As your icon suggests you are in an '55 model i think the only way to know is a dimming of the cluster lights when auto on - flick between auto on and off to note difference (very slight). This is why the indicator light was intro'd

green dash light appeared in 2007 Thumbs Up

My 2005 D3 didn't have one, the only way (apart from facing a wall/building) was to flick the lights onto manual and see if the dash dimmed.

My 2007 RRS has the light RRS gone

Thank you for the replies. I am indeed in a 55 model but thought I was going mad as I could see no indication that lights were on ....because there was no indication. Agree though that is somewhat easier to tell in the dark!
