Oh yes its knocking ! But we don't know how to fix it !

Just had the car in to see about the knocking noise from the front suspension, the dealer was less than impressed with people that trawl the web for information and present it to them when they arrive at the service desk.

They put it on the ramp and just had a poke about and called me just now to tell me that it needs Mass dampers on the suspension to try and cure the fault. They will have to remove a small shock absorber and put these mass dampers on. This is now a procreedure set out by LR for knocks from the front suspension !.

"Will it cure it" i asked, "we don't know" was the responce Rolling Eyes

How much ? £399

If that don't work then we have to replace the lower suspension arms and see if that cures it ?

That will cost about another £400 in labour and the cost of the arms, still with no gaurentee it will cure it !!

Not inclined to spend £400 to train their technitions !

Has anyone heard this responce before ? Andrew

My understanding is that Under Scottish Law you have 5 years protection (7 in England) against design faults with products. This is VERY MUCH a design fault with the RRS. I would try that line with the dealer and if it gets you nowhere then have a wee word with Trading Standards! Of course, if the car has a very high mileage then this may be more difficult to argue. LR standard warranty is 3 years or 60k miles, therefore assumes 20k per year. If your cars current mileage adds up to less than 20k per year then I would argue that it falls under the consumer protection law's defenition. One other point though, I think this only apples if you bought the goods from new. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Car only has 43,000 miles on the clock, even though it is an 07 plate, and with full service history.

LR just called and told me i am on my own, it is not their problem anymore. Not even a goodwill gesture !
I did not buy from them (LR network) so they will not help.
It is not a recall, it is not a fault, just a suggested upgrade.

Will not give me the contact details for the manager, just told me to write in, we all know where that will end up !

I feel this will be my last landrover.... the more you spend the less they seem to care.

Thinking about buying a RRS ? DON'T !

A very unhappy owner. Andrew

while i was there they were talking about a 3.6 HSE they bought in on a flat bed truck, 6 months old, suspension failed. Saw the dockets on the desk for it also.

Bad show really on a car of that value.

If I was you Andrew I would get them to pack the Arb first before they go doing £100's of pounds worth of work, they said it was my bottom ball joints that was causing my knock(wanted £650 to change the full lower wishbones for the sake of a £16 ball joint)I changed the ball joints and it made no difference. On the arb arm on the nearside there is a collar that I can only presume is to stop the Arb bush from pushing out, which I would say is nigh on impossible when its clamped up,but the tolerance between this collar and the frame work of the car is tiny,so my theory is that as the arb bush becomes compressed over time the collar comes into contact and that is the knock we here, hence landrover have come up with packing it forward, before I found out about this I packed mine with some C washers and it stopped the knock.
Not rocket science but it worked for me,hope its some help to you

Thanks, That is very interesting, i may give that a go as a temporary measure to see if that makes the difference first.
Just get the feeling the "techs" just follow a technical bulletin and don't think outside of it.

Andrew

Exactly my feelings, packing them out is easy, you just need to undo them a little and slip a C washer up behind the bracket,3 seperate garages all said my ARB bushes where fine but couldn't find the knock,I'm 99.9% sure that is the issue, not a bad design just over engineered.I've since removed the Arb arm and ground a flat on the collar to prevent it happening in the future Thumbs Up
I replaced the bushes aswell at the same time seeing as they where off,but they weren't needed really.
I think that is why poly bushes seem to give some success as they are a harder compound so dont suffer from compression the same.

Thanks Jim, just found that also, very interesting indeed.
Beats a £400 bill, more so when the techs are not sure it will even work !

The only thing with those is its more rubber to give up after a few months/years.By using a C washer its more of a permanent fix or better still put a flat on the collar for a once and for all fix, because if it starts to knock from this point again the bushes will defo.need replacing as I have 8mm of clearance now.
Ps dont worry about undoing the ARB arm completely it is not under compression. Thumbs Up
