very, very poorly TDV6....

Guys, having a bit of a nightmare day. Driving my RRS this morning and it suddenly started knocking like very loud tappets sound (old days). Directly connected to engine speed. I parked up and had it recovered to a main dealer. Won't know until tomorrow, but their first thoughts when they started it were that it needs a new engine!!!!! What??!?! A fully serviced, non towing TDV6 with 50k on - that doesn't sound good or right?

The parting shot as I left the dealer was that if it does need a new engine it could cost £5k to £6k - ouch!! (out of warranty).Furthermore, they say that it's usual for there to be a backorder on a new engine of 2 months - aaarrrgghh!!!

So I guess I asking for any thoughts or experience of any part of this from anyone. I'm pretty much in a flat spin right now and in shock.

Comments.

In short, not yet.

I have been given a price of £8000 by the stealer as I need a complete new engine!!!

I am just waiting on my insurance company to say if they accept this. Fortunuately I took a mechanical insurance option when I insured the car - phew!!

Although, it has been almost two weeks since it happened and they have been very quiet Confused

Not sure how long the engine will take to arrive, stealer says it could take two months . oouch!!

Will keep forum posted.

Suprised I needed a new engine even though it was still driveable. Stealer wanted £1500 to strip engine to determine exact fault - they could only suggest the problem from listening if I didn't want to pay this (odd?!?!?).

Anyway, let's see where it goes, on the case daily

Might be worth going back to dealer to identify what part or where the problem lies, I am just or just had a similar incident when my 57 RRS stopped no warning and brought it into the dealer to diagnose the proble, same rang me said knackered need a new engine, couldn't tell me why so finished up bringing it to another dealer for a second opinion, this time found that the chain linking the camshafts has snapped.
This chain doesn't have a part number therefore not a serviceable item and with the mileage, mine had 92000 was deemed as premature engine failure and therefore their cost in full.
They are just completing mine and should have it back this Wednesday hopefully, it has been over five weeks but worth following up to make them highlight the part that has gone, LR Customer services sorted everything once problem identified and I got a full refund from first garage due to them not diagnosing problem correctly, Just an idea but worth it in long run as mine was quoted 7348 to complete works.
Cheers
Tim

Sorry forgot to say I paid the first garage three hours labour but they only checked sensors and useless stuff like that where as the second dealer said easier just to remove the rocker covers, this is when he spotted the damage with in one and a half hour, good luck with it I hope alls well

Update. Good news is that my insurance company finally agreed to pay for the replacement engine, just under £8300!!

My stealer now has the engine and is in the middle of the changeover, so may be back on the road within 10 days.

Just one thing, the stealer told me that the engine they are using is a recon engine from Landrover direct. There is no such thing as a 'brand new engine' as a spare part?!?!? My engine must be sent back or they want a £3000 payment for me to keep it.

The stealer told me that they strip down the old engine and only re-use the block. They acid clean it and fit a new head and complete internal parts. This is done by Landrover and carries all the usual warranty etc of the original engine. This sounds very strange to me. Anyone else heard of this at this price from a main stealer?

I immediately thought two things when reading your post:
1. Surely it's your engine to keep if you want to after the insurance company has paid for the new one?

Or

2. The insurance company own it as they are the ones replacing it?

I would of said that LR are simply paid for the labour and the engine is purchased from them. Nice n simple. But I have not got any experience so just shooting from the hip but that's my initial reaction.
Hugely interested in this topic...

Unless the LR engine is bought via a factory 'exchange' system its yours or your insurance company's

Most newer engines like this are sold as exchange units so they can remanufacture it..

Well, I finally picked up my car from the main stealer in UK and drove it back to Sweden over the weekend - unfortunately it developed a water leak on Saturday morning at 3am on the M25 (en-route to Sweden). No option but to carry on and keep topping it up all the way!

1.5 litres of water every 50 to 60 miles - yawn, yawn....

Made it back to Stockholm last night and called local LR main stealer here who can't get it booked in until 5 May!!!!! Ouch..

Double whammy too. I decided to order a BAS remap whilst in UK so that I could enjoy a more fun and comfortable drive home. When I picked the car up from the stealer in the morning, it drove terrible, no life in it at all. Then the penny dropped, it must have already been re-mapped before I bought it (secondhand), then when the stealer replaced the engine they must have 'reset' the map to the original one. So when I installed the BAS re-map, I was back to my original setting - GUTTED £500 to get back to where I was and none of the thrill I expected driving home.

I pity all you guys driving a standard map TDV6, how very lame.

The fun continues..... Confused
