From my perspective you sometimes may want a wide tyre, or more specifically more rubber(foot print) in contact with the ground. Which is why you also sometimes reduce the airpressure in the tyres. Obviously this will depend on the exact circumstances and the drivers prerogative from his experience on such surfaces!
My experience is that it isn't the dealer, but Land Rover themsleves that say no. A dealer will not undertake any warranty work without prior approval from Land Rover, otherwise they may end up not getting paid. In most cases its simple, and a yes is given, particularly for known common issues. Where the dealer reports modifications such as none oem wheels, or if Land Rover come to inspect the car and find the same, then there is a carte blanche "no" to the warranty claim. The exact phrase I have seen in a completely unrelated scenario, which required a dealer report sending to Land Rover first was:
That's all they say. They won't even bother looking to see if the issue is directly caused by the none oem change you have made. |

Its obvious the no-one likes being told what they want to do is wrong but from my experience designing suspensions systems I can tell you that, like it or not wheel size and the tyre damping are critical specifications in tuning the vehicle's dynamics.

Can you tell us how a 19" supplied by Land Rover and a 20" supplied by the same with slightly diff rolling diameter and massively different tyre wall flex are both adapted into the suspension design of the same vehicle. I know for a fact that the ecu module control unit has exactly the same firmware & software - programme for both sets supplied no changes are made and the same can be said of the Range Rover / Land Rover approved winter wheel and tyre set up. Out of interest i have had 20" as standard on my last three cars 1 had minor issues , 1 had no issues , and the latest has had one suspension failure after another you name it , it has gone wrong on the suspension side of things. 2014 5.0SC AB Gone 5.0 SC |

One other point, Land Rover engineer all their vehicles to be taken off-road and there is a resulting compromise between tyres and wheels. Huge wheels put additional strain on the steering and suspension off-road that the car is not engineered to cope with so they limit the wheel size to one that they consider the best compromise.

Because we want to drive the best and not lose a small fortune in depreciation Seriously, I don't understand all the fuss with 22's, I've got them and you can't tell the difference from the 20's |

Now i dont know on the RRS or the others, but i do know on the Defender and the Freelander there is a setting to specify tyre size - which im aware doesnt impact air suspension as they dont have it - but its worth throwing in that there are options usual to specify wheel size

So what is standard? 17", 18, 19 or 20? The RRS can have all of them as per factory '08 RRS TDV8 I converted my diesel RRS to run on an environmentally friendly mixture of caribou fat and baby seals oil |
