Brakes Applying Themselves

-11 this morning and MY10 RRS TDV6 started fine, except as I drove it away it kept applying the brakes by itself. It's not as if the brakes were frozen on, as it starts driving fine and will then suddenly brake (not fully, the wheels don't lock) and then release the brakes by itself again after a few meters/seconds. It doesn't seem to be a mechanical problem with the actual braking system as the brake lights come on when this happens, it's really just as if the car computer is deciding to engage them (HDC is off by the way, and this occurs in both normal and snow driving modes). Applying the brakes manually feels like normal when the car's not braking, but doing so when the car's doing its own braking nearly sent me through the windscreen. There also seems to be occasional whirring sounds from the vicinity of the back wheels which I take to be related, though I can't check this when I'm in the car trying to drive it. After driving the car about 100m up and down the driveway, it seemed to sort itself out.

My wife also experienced the same problem when we had to cold weather a couple of weeks back, but a restart seemed to sort the problem out then.

Any idea why this might be happening, or even what's happening, or should I give LRA a call?

Have you got Forward Alert turned on? Ice covered sensors would cause this?

Good thinking, but unfortunately don't have this on my SE.

Got LRA coming out to have a look later on today. Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.8::MG Montego Turbo::MGB GT::Rover Sterling::MGF::MG ZT 190+

Just had the AA out (on behalf of LRA), though as is always the thing I couldn't get the fault to show itself again. All the mechanic could suggest was that it was the electronic stability trying to keep the car from skidding on the snow. However, I'm not convinced as although the car was driving on snow when it's done this, there was nothing else suggesting any traction issues, the car felt just as steady as if it was just driving along a normal road.

The mechanic also spoke to the AA's technical people who suggested the forward alert, but as mentioned before I don't have this fitted.

Not knocking the AA mechanic, but it's a shame it wasn't a LRA mechanic who attended. I could just take it in to the dealer, but I'd prefer a proper loaner through LRA rather than a Ford Fiesta or similar. Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.8::MG Montego Turbo::MGB GT::Rover Sterling::MGF::MG ZT 190+
