Swapping wheels ?!

Hi,

Please help .... I want to get some oversize and serious offroad tyres fitted to my Sport. I am currently running 20" alloys which are nice to look at but not much use off road. So, a few questions:

What is the smallest wheel i can fit to the RRS with Brembo brakes (17" or 18" )?
Will there need to be any modifications if I buy a set from ebay from a Disco 3 ?
What will the deepest tyre be that I could run, on either a 17" or an 18" wheel, without scrapping the wheel arch ?

Your help will be much appreciated!

Karcus

Hi Karcus

I believe the smallest wheel you can fit with Brembo brakes is 19".

Either RRS or D3 19s or FFRR 19s like pic, all with MTRs or ATRs/ATs.
Some peeps D3side run 20"ers with LTZ tyres.

Hi, Thanks for the info !

Those 19" FFRR wheels look great - what make / size tyres are those pictured ?

Any recommendations for a good All Terrain and Road tyre, on the 19" rim ?

Thanks

Proper RR wheels, 7 spoke type from MY06 - 09. Cheap as chips on fleabay normally.

Here on my D3 during a bit of a play in the mud, FFRR 19s & MTRs. Pirelli ATRs excellent AT tyre, use them on my D3, and new GG AT is getting good feedback with D3 users. Thumbs Up

Excellent! Those wheels and tyres are EXACTLY what I am looking for on my RRS....... Where did you get the MTR's for 19" wheels - can't seem to find them on the internet ?
Very Happy

And there your problems start!! You can get the rims a plenty on eBay but according to the discussion of such things Goodyear are not making the MTRs at the mo, some say they have stopped making them totally. Try Andy at AJS4x4 (sponsor D3side) as he had some in recently. Just sold my 2 sets of MTRs on D3 and could have old them 5 times over hey are so in demand.

I was thinking of getting off road tyres but it is impossible to find AT/MTR 255/50 R19 107 Y to satisfy insurance/LR spec/warranty - Disco is ok on 55 profile so more choice Big Cry

For 2010 RRS I need 9J rim which is a minefield as many on ebay are 8J - I would think you need 9J with Brembo Sad

The 20's are even worse - only summer tyres available - not even M+S Evil or Very Mad

I have just about given up Rolling Eyes Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

The MTR 255/55 R19 fit the RRS fine and are the best off road tyre. Be aware though that they aren't great for on road use. They are very noisy and grip isn't great. I sold mine in the end as I didn't like the on road ride.

As has been mentioned the forum sponsor is advertising having some in stock. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

Changed my MTRs for ATRs as not doing any mud plugging these days and moved souff to avoid snow. Well that worked out well! Thud Also ATRs drive just like Scorps and last 40k miles. Thumbs Up

Beware off 55's on RRS - this is not a size recommended by LR in handbook/label on door - owners have had warranty issues and insurance companies class these as vehicle modification so may invalidate insurance if not informed/approved Exclamation Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Know the problem but in reverse. RRS new take off wheels & road tyres are often cheap as chops (bit more than chips) but the tyres are too small and under on weight rated. No good if you want to stay strictly within spec. Sad

But the RRS hand book does list this size for winter tyres! WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

This appears to be an error according to revised LR info

Phone site sponser AJS tyres, they can deliver and will no whats what. A quick phone call to your insurance company before fitting will see if they have any problems ( translates to extra premiums)
