I'm not sure if you got to the bottom of this cold start problem, but I had the same thing happen this morning.

I had absent mindedly left my finger on the start button and once the cold start was over the engine started, I took my finger off the button, ran for a second or 2, then cut out. I realised what I had done, so started as I usually do, which is depress the start button for about a second, then wait for the cold start procedure to do it's thning and it then starts up. The problem is when you leave your finger on the start button, it should be released as soon as the start process commences.

Not sure if you hold your finger on the button and this is causing this issue?

Thanks for the feedback. Normally the correct procedure, as you say, is to press and then release the start button (whilst keeping your foot on the brake). However, the manual says if the car repeatedly fails to start you should keep your finger on the button all the time. I have tried both ways and still get the failure to start in very cold temps. It is booked in on Thursday - suspected faulty glow plug(s). 14.5MY SDV6 HSE Dynamic Indus silver/lunar/ebony 20" wheels, InControl, full-size spare, electric tow bar, adaptive xenons, adaptive cruise control, auto main beam assist. I apologise in advance - this is going to be a rant Evil or Very Mad
Collected the car yesterday morning at 8am as instructed by the service receptionist (because the loan car was booked out to someone else for the day). Temp was about -2; went to start car and guess what - exactly the same problem. The only person at the dealership at that time knew nothing about the job but said someone would call me at 8.30 so I have no choice but to to keep trying until it eventually started as I was late for a meeting and there was no other loan car.

Needless to say, no one phoned me at 8.30, so I called them only to be be told there had been some Censored -up at their end and the workshop thought they had the car for 2 days. No work had been done the first day, despite a written report from LR Assist telling them to check the glow pugs and glow plug relays: "oh no sir, we won't do that - it's half a days work and we don't take any notice of what LR Assist tell us - we have to make our own diagnosis. We don't have any loan cars now until after Christmas so our best advice is to call LR Assist if it happens again..."

Basically, I'm back to square one. Has anyone seen the film Groundhog Day?

Did call customer care. It went something like this: "We don't own the dealerships sir...it's up to them how they diagnose problems...and LR Assist technicians are not LR trained staff; they're only from the AA. Is there anything else I can help you with today sir? Have a nice day sir".

It's standard at the moment, although shortly it may have modified bodywork as a I'm going to give it a damn good thrashing shortly. That should do it. Now now boys...

...getting this thread back on track Wink , I've had a further development with my cold starting problem. Basically, it has started first time for the last two mornings, temps -2 and -9 respectively Very Happy . This is a massive step forward and here's what I've done differently: instead of following the instructions in the handbook, I have turned the ignition on without pressing the brake, waited for the glowplug light to go out, then pressed the brake & the start button. It starts first time, with almost no delay for a "cold start procedure". I repeat, this is NOT how the handbook tells you to start the car (but it's how I've started every other diesel I've ever had) Exclamation

My question to other MY10 TDV8 owners is: what cold start procedure do you follow Question 14.5MY SDV6 HSE Dynamic Indus silver/lunar/ebony 20" wheels, InControl, full-size spare, electric tow bar, adaptive xenons, adaptive cruise control, auto main beam assist. For me it's foot on the brake, press and hold the start button. Cold start message will appear followed by a fair wait but then the engine fires into action. It never fails to start (since I had the new starter motor). WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Santorini Black

Old Stager wrote:
Well, it actually failed to start at all today. Tried 10 or 12 times; it would fire up for a couple of seconds, then cut out. It wasn't even cold ('only' -3). Was late for a meeting so I used my wife's BMW 1 Series diesel which had been sat on the drive unused for a week. Needless to say, it started first time. When I got back home I tried the RRS again and eventually coaxed it in to life after about another 10 attempts.

Anyone got any ideas as to what may be the problem Question

Might be simply the battery. My dealer (which is usually very knowledgeable) told me I should not leave the RRS when parked
outside more that 2 or 3 days when below 0° without starting the engine at least once. He said in very cold conditions (we had minus 3 to 11 these last 2 weeks), battery will get low. He also said when driving, avoid to fire up everything in the car at once, lest you should drain the battery (iPhone, DVD, seat heating, steering wheel heating, front and rear glass heating, blabla…).
And in fact, prior to his advice, I had one episode when leaving the car outside for 5 days without driving it, when pressing the ignition, I had a start, then it stopped. I waited a bit, restarted, and off we pop.

Hope this helps. 2010 TDV6 3.0 HSE Santorini Black Tan Full Leather
