Just booked my car in for 45K service and was offerd the following as additional extras that they reccomend you should carry out at the 45K or 2 year period:

Engine Flush and Emmision Control - claims it will make the engine more economical £39.99 inclusive.
Brake Fluid Change £79.99 inclusive

Question is do i need them or am i being sold expensive extras?

Got told by my dealer that the brake fluid was changed EVERY three years and that was part of service. Engine flush was done every service when oil was changed. Thought air - con service was an extra? Think i would have a phone around if i was you. Oh my dealer is Yeovil.

I actually thought that the dealer was trying it on but close inspection of the fine print shows your dealer is correct on the brake fluid. Engine flush is not specifically mentioned. My main dealer (Copley) uses engine flush on a service gratis. I guess it depends what they mean by emission control and what it involves.

So my dealer is trying it on, brake fluid change every 3 years, mine is at 2

What about engine flush should this be part of the service or not? if it is i will question what else they are not doing - Thanks

Doesn't need doing in that case.

Engine flush in its simplest is about £5 a bottle that you mix with the old oil before draining it. It helps to get the dregs of the oil out in theory. It isn't specified in the service sheet but I know Copley always used it on my V8 Defender.

Cheers, i will phone them and let them know i am not happy about being told it needs it at 2 years and see what they are going to do about a flush FOC for trying to mislead me but they could say yes we will do it and i would never know so may be best to take it elsewhere and just let them lose the trade for their handy work on the phone

Make sure they still fully warrant the car after the engine flush. The reason i say this is that a local MB indy who i know well wanted to do a flush on my Merc SL500 which is only a few quid so i said yeah ok add that to the quote.

I spoke to my MB main dealer and they said "whatever i do don't have the flush" and they point blank refused to even offer me it. Apparently its not recommended for some engines and MB do not recommend it for any of their vehicles.

That said my bro has a Subaru Impreza Turbo and it gets an engine flush with every oil service (6k miles) and it have never, ever gone bad in 10 years of owning it.

Just check your warranty is 100% unaffected that's all.

Its something that they will charge you £10 for and you would never know it had been done or not since its added to the old oil before its drained but the car has to be driven about 20 miles i think in order for it to work so reset your trip computer and if they haven't driven the car they didn't do it / didn't do it properly.

I would say that on a lower mile or well serviced car then go for it. But on something that you can visibly see sludge or build up in the engine then be wary as it can make deposits become loose and these can in turn block oil ways...

Brake fluid is hygroscopic so it absorbs water over time. Then after some hard braking this water boils due to heat from the brakes. The result is you have a bubble of gas(steam) in the brake pipe, this being a gas is compressible giving spongy inefficient brakes due to the brake peddle compressing the gas instead of forcing the pads against the discs.

Sorry if preaching to the converted, but yes changing the brake fluid at recommended times is a wise move.
