In the cold weather we're having at the moment, mine doesn't always start first time from cold. It will fire up and run for a second or two, then cuts out. Then when it does finally run, usually after about 3 or 4 attempts, the tick over is really lumpy for the first 10 or 15 seconds.

Is this normal

PS - it says on the display that a cold start is in progress and there is quite a long delay before the engine starts to turn over, so I'm assuming the glow plug is heating up OK. 14.5MY SDV6 HSE Dynamic Indus silver/lunar/ebony 20" wheels, InControl, full-size spare, electric tow bar, adaptive xenons, adaptive cruise control, auto main beam assist. In the cold weather mine sounds a bit lumpy when first started on the day. Never seen the cold start message even in -28c weather, could be a feature on the 2010 model, I always wait for the glow plug light to go out before turning the engine over. Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

I know some RRS owners in Russia who also have a similar problem. But that is in mother Russia, they get very low temperatures.
Historically, cars have always behaved badly in cold conditions. I find it perfectly normal to not to be able to start the engine from the first time when temperature plunges below 0 C. So I would not worry  Vadim A.

Historically, I agree - the last car I had cold starting problems with was a Ford Sierra 1.6 in 1985! Well, it actually failed to start at all today. Tried 10 or 12 times; it would fire up for a couple of seconds, then cut out. It wasn't even cold ('only' -3). Was late for a meeting so I used my wife's BMW 1 Series diesel which had been sat on the drive unused for a week. Needless to say, it started first time. When I got back home I tried the RRS again and eventually coaxed it in to life after about another 10 attempts.

I would suggest a fuel problem, you don't use supermarket tat do you? If it aint broke leave it!

Certainly not Only ever fill up with 'branded' diesel - Shell, BP, Esso etc. Last fill was Shell, but I've had this problem on and off ever since the cold weather started and I've filled up a couple of times in that time.

Sorry to suggest that bud but there is only a few things that cause the bad starts and that is fuel, glow plugs and map sensor!! Oh and the wrong oil, if you are running this the engine will really struggle! If it aint broke leave it!

No worries - I'm grateful for any advice I only had the RRS in July so it's still running whatever oil was put in at the factory; it's hardly needed any topping up, but what little it's had has been Castrol Magnatec as per the book. I've found stealer's are pretty useless also unless they have a master technician! it might be the only option you have to run a diagnostic, at least you'll have peace of mind!!  If it aint broke leave it!

I know what you mean...I could write a book about my experiences with BMW dealers over the years. I'm new to the Land Rover brand and have yet to sample the quality of service on the repair and maintenance side.
