Have you tried tar and glue remover? Worked ok on mine.

I've heard people using very fine grade wire wool, i've used it on the bike exhaust and it was fine but never tried it on the RRS!! If it aint broke leave it!

Use Autoglym chrome cleaner on mine (recomended by JKP on D3 site) - brought them up like new again
