Replacement Discs

My RRS had its 75k service today and happy to report it was all routine. However, new discs and pads all round will be required. A rough quote was £1200 (ouch!) and so I'm looking for a more cost effective alternative.

A quick search shows that I can at least halve that with some nice grooved or drilled discs from EBC or quarter it if I fit bog-standard Brembo replacements. This includes pads and (although I shall probably DIY it).

Has anyone got any recommendations for aftermaket parts? Did you notice any difference in performance especially after fitting grooved or drilled discs?

Thanks in advance.

Did you ask if skimming the current discs was an option? Whats the thickness of your current discs? I don't know what the minimum limit is but I'm sure someone on here will know.

I've had my Discovery discs skimmed when the dealer told me they needed replacements......

Your RRS is well out of warranty Joka so why use a franchised service outlet? You will at least half (my local guys are 1/3 of the hourly rate of the nearby franchised outlet!) the labour charge using a non-franchise LR specialist and there are several down your way in the Southampton area. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Hi, my RRS 2.7TDV car went in for its 5 year service last week, aslo 75,000 miles but have only done 48,000, and they said that discs and pads were needed all round. they had quoted me £650 5 months ago which has now lept to £900 all round. Had a qick phone around to non-franchised and have got it down so far to about £650 again but will try a few more to see if it can come down some more.

I also saw the grooved and drilled discs and thought they would look good behind my 22 inch stormer style wheels! I would aslo be interested to know if anyone else has used these and are they any good?

Joka,

If you are happy to tackle it yourself, then have a look at the Brake Bible by Bodsy on the Disco3 forum Brake Bible.
The bible has advice on tools, safety etc. It is a step by step guide and there's plenty of pictures.

On the last page there is a couple of recommendations of places to contact to get either OEM or non-OEM brakes, if you mention the bible you should get a bit of a discount Thumbs Up

I got a full set of OEM discs and pads for mine including the EPB for less than £500 from Nick at Yeovil LR, so i was very pleased! Very Happy

Many thanks for the replies. There are reputable non-franchised workshops near me and will get a quote as some have suggested.

As for skimming, the service feedback was 1 / 2mm so by the time they are skimmed they will be borderline plus the cost of skimming.

Regards......

Well I got the car back on Thursday and took the 150km highway to Abu Dhabi...the vibrations throughout the entire car are unbeleivable....I can't understand how they didn't notice it during the test drive!
I spoke to the workshop manager who said the wheels might need balancing since they may not have put them back on the same corner of the car from where they came.
What a croc of rubbish....a correctly balanced wheel will behave perfectly no matter where you put it back on the car.
Me thinks the discs might be out of sync or something? Ideas??
They fitted two new front discs and new pads all around.

Thx.

I personally would not recommend skimming/machining, especially the Front Rotors, one hard braking and they have a tendency to warp, happened to mine and the LR specialist told me he see's it countless times, it can be a false economy.. LR Australia went down this route and have since i have been told binned it Another Pommie Bar Steward down under
