The next project on the RRS

iPad integration with navigation, etc.

Here's a mock-up of what it could look like:

Hopefully getting 9 days of for Eid as of Thursday 9th Sept so hope to make some progress on design and proper mock-ups as well as taking the dash to bits if I can find an ACed garage to work in....

I'm also looking at installing a reversing camera, but, rather than use either of the 2 screens I'm going to install a new rear view mirror with a 3.2" LCD display Smile Perfect location for the screen IMHO.

Have a good weekend guys.

Guy

I'll take that as a compliment Leeds Wink

There's alot of work involved especially with either relocating or hopefully setting back the existing Head Unit as that is still used, unless of course I run the iPad out through an equaliser and into the amps....

Also the existing screen will need to be raised to make space, and a suitable housing made. The heater controls will be relocated marginally and the PDC. DSC, Central locking and Hazard Warning will be moved more significantly, as will the Passenger Airbag warning light.

So there's lots of planning that needs to go into before I start cutting the dash board etc....

I'll try and keep you updated on developments.

Interesting idea... But looks slightly disproportional relative to the surroundings. Also, if you do go ahead with it, you better make sure you install it properly, as it will attract a lot of attention and some loosers may try to break in to steal it.
Also, when it gets called in the winter you may experience some issues with the Ipad. First of all, sudden change of temperature (when you turn the heating on once in the car) may or may not cause the plastic to crack over time (potentially.... just a rough guess), or at least... it will be getting moist and who knows how long it will last like that. But then, people do carry Iphones in the winter - however, for a short time, i.e. just to make calls... Moreover, Ipad will have updates, and as some know, Iphone has updates sometimes over 300mb or even more. It takes 5-15 mins to download them with a proper connection, but when using 3gs......... it will take you ages to update the iPad. I would imagine iPads are going to have even bigger updates than iPhones... This means that you will have to install it in a way so that you can detach it whenever necessary. Imagine if you do it this way, you can take it out when you need it, but what if it breaks? iPad is broken, you take it out to fix it and you have a huge whole in the dashboard... Vadim A.

Hi Vadim, all valid points. The iPad would be mounted on something like a Brodit mount so that I can remove it from the car without issue. As such theft and updates would not be an issue.

The heat/ cold issue I agree with. I had a problem with the iPhone that I left in the car over the day. It reached it's max operating temperature and had to cool down before it was operational. I don't think the cold will be a problem in Oman Wink

The idea would be to use an iPad desktop stand which splits power and audio. The audio going to the aux in of the OEM head unit, power hard wired to the car. Additionally, I'd like to splice in the SDcard reader and the TomTom external GPS antenna... So not a small task by any means.

Also I suspect I'll need to 'build' new hockey sticks and gearbox tunnel sides. I'm then looking at using CarID's 'real brushed aluminium' details to change the look of the dash to something more exclusive....

I'll see how all the above goes, could be a real disaster knowing my luck....

hah Sorry, I did not notice your location................................... Laughing indeed, cold should not be a problem, but with the climate change who knows!!! Rolling with laughter

Anyway, good luck with your plan. Keep us updated! Thumbs Up

V. Beckham was involved in LRX design, and all she could come up with was to integrate a tiny iphone into the console. Look at the difference when a proper RRS driver designs his own car.... he goes for a big one - integreates iPad! Cool Vadim A.

I see where you're coming from VA. Basically I've not been content with the layout of the RRS dash since I've had the car and wondered how I could improve, from installing a after market head unit omr a carputer. Both didn't give me what I wanted. Oh and I don like the green back light Wink

The iPad on the other hand did. It offers the functionality of a carputer, is readily upgradeable and is aesthetically pleasing. To top it off it gave added mobility. Combining this with the aforementioned rearview mirror with LCD screen for the reversing camera provides a great solution.

Ok enough BS justifying it for technical, aesthetically reasons, I like a challenge and that's my excuse Laughing

Yeah I've got a similar temporary solution, however, I want to have a more permanent solution replacing the oem system regards control and optics. Everythings ordered so we'll see how it goes... 2006 RRS S/C CONSTANTLY under modification...

Cheers Leeds Thumbs Up

Well i've spent a bit off time looking at the options and taking note of coments made, particularly that it look disproportionally big and come up with this option:

Now the question is... can the head unit be set back to allow the iPad to slot in, infront of it? Guess it's time to take the dash apart...

and to see what the switches are like, size 0 or size 18... if they're size 0 electronic switches this should work, if not... back to the drawing board Evil or Very Mad

Just for info the iPad depicted is the screen, the rest would be behind the switches, the blank 'double' switch on the left would be the switch for the iPad's 'menu' button. The smaller turn buttons are from a Blaupunkt stereo, everything else is OEM RRS, but, relocated a touch Very Happy

Further I may try to retain the Passenger Airbag Indicator in it's original position, top the right of the screen and may look to adding a starter button to the top left of the screen...

Guy
