Clutchdust, are you saying that earlier TDV6's use lots of oil throughout their service lives, as I was under the impression it was only for the running in period, and mainly due to the oil initially soaking into the semi porous graphite block, with not that much getting past the piston rings? Any idea when they started fitting modified rings, in case I decide to update mine? (don't want to buy a lemon). Rolling Eyes Just as a matter of interest, in the cases where an owner has failed to keep the oil level correct, has LR stumped up for replacing engines, or have the owners had to fork out (loads I should imagine). Oh and BBBB, sorry to hear of your problem, shaft broken eh (crank or cam ?) sounds pretty terminal , I hope they get it sorted for you. Thumbs Up

Running in period can vary depending on how the car is driven, If its thrashed or driven hard from day one, it will always use oil.

LR will pay for the engine and have done on the 3 that I've changed although its a struggle as engines are on restriction and you cant just order one and fit it, there is a process you have to go through to get authorisation.

I think the modified rings were introduced half way through 06 model year. I no longer work for Stratstone land rover cardiff. Thank f**K!!!

Thanks clutchdust, damn, mines an early '06, mind you it's hardly needed any oil at all, even at first, now done 18000miles, but it does sound a bit noisier (tappety) than others, and causes vibration through the whole car at idle, just doesn't seem as silky smooth as others I have driven. BBBB, Good Luck, and yeah, post some pics, and let us know how you get on. Thumbs Up

Last week as i was driving back home from work the car started to make a funny sound and to vibrate. After a few more km the car stopped and failed to start. The next day i had the car towed to the dealer and they had told me that i have a bad starter motor and they will change it --- so far so good because i was thinking the engine is broken. After 3 days in shop they phoned me and guess what ---- THE ENGINE IS DEAD. The shaft has broken and
damaged the entire engine. I'm out of warranty and they want to charge me 9000 euros for the engine repairs.
The car is a 2006 RRS 2.7 diesel engine with 120.000km on board. The funny thing is that they already had another car with the same problem at the dealer. Now i'm thinking this is a land rover's engine problem and they should repair it on warranty but the service manager doesn't want to hear anything like that Big Cry .
What do you think i should do? I live in Romania and here the customer care is poor.

Thank you
Sorry for my spelling errors.

Same problem here with the crankshaft breaking and firing debris into the engine, bent all the piston heads.

RR want £7400 for new engine! My car is 18 months out of warranty but I have been onto LR UK to complain and they are looking into it.

My gripe is its done 80,000 of motorway miles. At aged 2 it needed a new Rear diff, 18 months later EGR valves and EGR coolers and now an engine!

Not what i expect from a £50,000 + motor that is less than 5 years old.

My next stop will be the press if they dont resolve the matter.

Yes that's right... Basically the engines are the same so there are only a few bits to swap over.....

I was going to put one in my 110 crewcab but the output shafts are on the wrong side and I would have had to either change the gearbox (but I wanted auto) or the axles but I saw the light and bought a RRS instead and love it.....

the service manager didn't have and still doesn't have any answers regarding this problem. when i look at the service history for both cars (we own 2 rrs 2.7 diesel) my personal opinion is that the cause is the really bad quality of this cars.

Probably right. My RRS only had 80,000K on the clock when it happened to me. I had to get a new engine in the end which I managed to get for £2,200 with 34,000K on the clock. I had that fitted in December 2010 and so far its been ok. I have had other problems since then though whuch have needed fixing.

Range Rover offered to pay a third of my engine cost in the end, BUT only on a new engine fitted by them. They wanted £8,000 all in to fit a new engine. So i was still much better off going and putting my own in for £2,200
