@ Tim

I am running my MY10 sport on 22s. No problem for road use which is all they are for. What my intention is, for winter use I'll be putting the standard 20s back on, but selling the continental tyres on them and replacing them with off-road tyres.

I intend on doing a bit of soft-roading and will probably be on local beaches etc. And whilst sure the standard 20s tyres will b okay for what I need, I'd still like to put either off road tyres or snow and ice tyres on.

What would your recommendation be? Would you go for a set of.dedicated off road tyres or are snow and ice sufficient for a bit of soft-roading?

Thanks in advance,

Ross

Please guys I know very little about the right sort of tyres for your cars - I would say though that if you only intend gentle offroading then any of the modern 18" or 19"Mud and Snow tyres with a decent sidewall height (ie NOT low profile tyres) will protect your alloys better than the standard 20's that most RRS come on (remeber if your car has Brembos fitted the smallest wheel you can fit is a 19" and even then not all LR 19"styles will fit ). All the big names of the tyre making world make good products that they spend millions of pounds developing. Apart from the side wall height you want to make sure that your choice is suitable for the RRS's speed ability and weight, this means you can use your car to it's full potential on-road as well. Bear in mind too that changing the size of tyre will also have an effect on your speedo too and can make you appear to be travelling slower than you really are. Also I would not recommend buying fake LR wheels if you are going to take your RRS off-road, even gently. Offroad your wheels can suffer sudden loading changes that an OEM wheel can withstand - with copies you do not know how strong they are.
The real experts on what tyres to fit are over on our sister forums at Disco3 where there is a dedicated tyres section.

For the winter - all the makers sell a Snow and Ice tyre - in Nordic countries Kumho seem to be highly regarded, but in the rest of Europe it seems to be down to personal preference. The Pirelli Scorpion Snow and Ice tyres I run on in the winter are also rated for Mud and Snow, they are 19" and R rated and have a weight rating suitable for RRS. They not the cheapest tyre on the market and if you have been used to running on wheels/tyres bigger than LR recommends then you will find that running on them makes the suspension feel like driving a feather bed - the higher side wall not only protects the alloys it helps make the tyre more flexible and bump absorbing. These tyres can also be used for gentle offroading as they generally have a deeper tread than the LP tyres fitted by LR. The problem with running Snow and Ice tyres is that once the winter is over their softer compound make them a bit sticky on the road so their life will be reduced a bit. My S&I Pirellis are recommended for use in ambient temperatures below 7c but this doesn't mean they need to be removed at the first hint of a sunny day. The Pirelli S&I tyres are also now available in 20" so if you still have your old RRS wheels then you could fit these to them and make sure you have a friendly tyres shop who will swap your wheels over for you - they have all the right jacks and power tools to do the job in a few minutes, BUT make sure that you are satisfied that they know about the right places to jack up your RRS as using a trolley jack in the wrong place will knacker your air-suspension compressor/ plumbing.
Another place apart from the manufacturers' websites and Disco3.co.uk are AJS Tyres who sponsor the forum. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

ok, here's one more question...

would you (for winter driving) prefer snow and ice tyres, or a proper set of AT tyres, or even something like your mud tyres.

i have seen how cheap you can buy the TDV6 19's on ebay, and coupled with a decent set of AT or mud tyres could make mud pluggin fun, but I am wondering is it overkill if all I will ever realistically be doing is a bit of gentle soft roading.

will the snow and ice tyres be more than enough to fulfill my needs?

thanks

I think you will find that MTR's are quite noisy on the road and grip and braking on tar are rediced, also your fuel consumption will increase. I believe some of the D3 guys run on ATR's all the time, but then D3 has 19's as standard fitting so less of a problem with the speedo needing to be recalibrated. I have both MTRs and S&I tyres, have never tried to run the MTRs in the snow. As I said last winter I found the normal 20" Pirellis that the car was delivered with were fine in 10cms of snow when used with the GGS setting of the TR.

The problem with the low profile tyres on the RRS is that the tread pattern clogs up with mud when off road and turns them into slicks pretty quickly and no amount of fancy electronics can cure that, even MTR's will clog but it will take a lot more mud to stop them than it will for a normal road tyre 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thanks for that Tim... I think that I will sell the standard 20" road tyres that came on the car and look for a higher profile snow & ice tyre, as opposed to ATR tyres, which will hopefully do for the small amount of soft roading I may ever do in my RRS.

Am I right in assuming that s&i tyres would be better in soft sand / grassy fields etc than the standard road tyres?

Thanks again MY10 HSE 3.0 TDV6 : Santorini Black : Ebony Interior w/Anigre wood : Privacy Glass (total) : Sunroof : Sidesteps : Hybrid TV : Detachable Tow Kit : Spare Wheel Cover : 22" Dished Supersports
