Looking forward to this too... my wife is on her second Freelander so we've done two LREs so far. They're an education that's for sure... goes to show that the capabilities of the car.

What can I say went on the LRE level one course at Skipton yesterday.
Thanks to Ian our instructor and a very friendly and knowlegable staff made for an excellent day out. If you get the chance to go I would recommened Skipton to any body.
The day was great I have certainly had my eyes opened as to just how well this car can perform of road but can not believe it is so good on the road when you see what it can do off road.
I really do take my hat off to Land Rover, we never oncce were told that you cant take it there or, no we cant try that every where it went the car just excelled and was as happy as a pig in mud.
I really enjoyed the rock crawl and was amazed at how well this car does perform nott many of the 4X4 cars that I have had can come close to this car.

I did the half day basic LR Exp. course at Skipton on Sunday. It was the half hour classroom based lesson on what differentials do that surprised me. I hadn't appreciated that when one wheel stops spinning the opposite side doubles in speed (or can quadruple in speed) instantly. If that wheel then suddenly contacts an obstacle that stops it spinning the forces are huge and can easily snap a half shaft. I have snapped many half shafts, CV joints and diffs in my offroading trips and now better understand why that would happen....

I found the half hour chat very interesting too, very clearly explained with the use of models and even my partner said she understood what they were saying. She usually struggles with anything technical .

I was in a Disco 3 auto (we bought ours 10 months ago but never got the voucher. The RRS doesn't arrive until Christmas).

I thought the hill section of the course was a bit tame and certainly didn't show the vehicles limits. Mind you it was dry and in the wet it would have been a different story. The field with the gulley, water, rock crawl etc was good as it really illustrated the range of the vehicles abilities (albeit in a very controlled and man made environment).

I have done a lot of offroading over the years (mainly in vehicles without fancy electronics but still a fair bit in the D3) but I still learnt a few new things. HDC has always been a bit of a mystery to me, and thats now clearer, changing up and down from high to low on the move in neutral was also new to me (I always have stopped first in the past), and how the ECU works out if it should be applying ABS or traction control also was useful to hear (based on is the wheel skidding when the driver has foot on brake or throttle). Braking on grass was also proven to be more effective when the brake was pressed less firmly so ABS didn't work overtime.

Oh, and the drive from Hexham accross Weardale, Teesdale and various other Yorkshire Dales on a bright, clear Sunday morning was absolutely spectacular.

I received my voucher last week.

It seems a bit rough that the offer is only valid for 3 months, as for me to take up the offer this year I need to make a special trip across the water from Jersey which is not as easy as driving down the motorway!

To make it worth my while I will need to spend at least 2 days away and am considering booking the free half day followed by the full day course the next day.

Does anybody know how the two courses differ and whether part of it is just repeated?

The full day course (level 1) builds on the half day, basically covering the half course then another half day to make the full. So just do the full day. You will be surprised what the car can do. If you can get on one of BN's off road days they are excellent and non damaging, even with 20" bling wheels like Neil has

I don't think you guys realise quite what you are driving, off road there is very little to better it. X5s and Cayennes aren't anywhere near the ability.

I have since found out that LR are running a special day at the LR experience centre in Devon for customers from the Channel Islands in November.
