I remember reading a post from a while ago with someone highlighting that they believed Conti's to be a soft tyre which fitted to a 2.5 tonne vehicle could lead to wear issues.

There have been quite a few D3's with alignment problems causing rapid wear on the outer edges, might be worth you doing a search on Disco3.
Apparently they were set up wrong at the factory (no offence TB) Wink

No offence taken Cliff. Wheel alignment is nothing to do with me. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

The sidewalls of the stock Contis (both 19 and 20") are amazingly "tender" and susceptible to tearing / cracking / scuffing at the slightest contact with a curb. It happened to me as well. After a light "encounter" with a curb (I did not even feel it when it happened), I only noticed a tiny scuff mark on the rim itself, but a couple of scary looking, deep gashes on the sidewall. Jeffrey sliced his stock 19"ers pretty good after just a few hours of relatively mild - for his standards, anyway - offroading in the rocky desert here in So. California... In addition to curbs on pavement, stones and rocks are murder on stock tires and wheels. Must be a combination of soft rubber compound, short sidewall and heavy vehicle weight.

I'm at 12,000 miles now and I have 6mm tread depth across all the tyres. The front tyres edges do look a bit scuffed but I expect to get over 20,000 miles on this first set.

I have also taken mine offroad which ended in all my alloys getting scuffed and scraped, however the tyres have been fine.

Hows this for progress, the Freelander has tyres and wheels the same size as the original Range Rover Classic! L319 D4 HSE

So what are the best tyres for compromise of grip/durability? If I'm buying a set of Stormers + tyres, I want to make sure I get the right tyres on them. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Definitely avoid Kumho I would say, despite what people say about the Contintentals, they are at least a well known brand, very good quality and also the manufacturer's choice. The people that sell the stormer replicas on ebay always seem to bundle in the kumho tyres.

I've seen first hand what cheaper tyres can do, it CAN be the difference between life and death and in my experience, never worth skimping on. They are the only thing keeping the car on the road, and you and your family safe.

Cheaper tyres also wear out quicker or they last longer but have terrible handling.

There's not a huge amount of choice for a car so heavy at such high speed rating and also one that can cope off road.

I've taken mine off road and not got stuck yet!
