Have to say the UK armed forces really do put far much more effort into welfare than any business or corporation I've ever encountered, maybe it gets more difficult as manpower draws down and commitments extend, but it's still the case, and for genuine welfare reasons rather than corporate P.R.

I was still in the RAF 8 years ago when my daughter was born prematurely at 26 weeks and spent five months in different hospitals across the UK, sometimes fighting for her life. During this time, the RAF bent over backwards to do anything it could for me - I was virtually off work for about 3 months of the time. The RAF Benevolent Fund even made a significant charitable donation to one of the hospital support groups when they became aware of my situation.

On a personal note I was RN and whilst I saw good welfare management it depended on whether the face fitted. My Ex had an aemergency hysterectomy and I wasnt released to go to the hospital but kept to "nurse" a non flying prototype Merlin instead. Welfare recommended 6 weeks at home and it was also refused.
