looking for some buying advise

Hi All,

I'm currently looking into a move to a RRS from a VW touareg. I'm looking for some advise on what to look out for when purchasing a RRS and if there are any issues /major issues I should watch out for. I would be looking for a 2006 TDV6 HSE.

Any advise is truly welcome.

Cheers

From my experience you need to check the following:
1. maintenance history (of course)
2. condition of brake pades and rotors (this is a heavy vehicle)
3. condition of tires (as they are quite expensive and tires with little tread perform poorly in winter, even on a RRSport)
Here in the USA if you are purchasing a pre-owned land rover, then certification is very important. It gives you coverage and peace of mind that will last past the original factory warranty.
My vehicle was originally not certified, but the dealership agreed to certify the truck if I purchased it. I know that the brake pads and rotors were replaced because the certification specifications had to be met.

Mate only some cars have it - but you see posts on here about it - just slight knocking sounds from the front suspension when going over bumps in the road etc.

Many of us don't but some of us do........so have been fixed under warranty - and some have been tried, but the fix still doesn't work. Do a serach for the suspension knocking and I';m sure you'll find it.

Chances are you'll buy a car which won't have it mate......

If I'm not mistaken, the knock is only found in those RRSports with the dynamic suspension option. It is standard on all supercharged models here in the USA, and I think it is an option on HSE versions. I do experience the knock, but only under certain conditions: at low speed (less than 10 mph) while making a turn on a bumpy road.

I was in the same situation.

I started looking in September 2009 and have looked at quite a few, both at dealers and private sales.
Many were in quite poor condition all things considered, kerbed alloys (my pet hate and a good indication to the the previous owners general care and attention), damaged paintwork etc.

check the underside for signs of off roading
check the tyres for cuts, damage and tread depth
check for oil leaks under the engine
Paint damage, scratches would also indicate some offroading
a fitted towpack would indicate that the car has been pulling trailers at soem point in its life unless the tow ball is still clean!
Exterior Colour and interior is important to. Java Black seems to command higher prices - but thats because it is the best colour for the car!
Price / mileage is also a major consideration - and a 2006 car will be out of LR standard warranty.

We were looking at 2006-2007 TDV6 cars but ended up paying a bit more to have a reasonably low mileage 2007 TDV8 which was bought from a dealer with 12months MOT, full LR backed 12 month warranty and UK/European breakdown assistance plus a few extras to sweeten the deal. The car is for the better half so was all done for peace of mind.

I think we got a great car and for good value but it did take 6 months. you'd expect people with 60k cars to look after them, the truth is that a lot don't care from what I've seen. In some cases private sellers are selling for more than dealers (although price may be negotiable of course) and there would be no back up on a 3-4 year old car.

Do your homework as with any car, talk to people, I found this forum very useful to. If your not sure take someone with you who does know about the brand to help when you decide to look at one.

HTH and good luck

Cheers
Rob
