I have just taken it in as the Brake warning light came on indicating what i thought was a brake pad change. They do need changing (although it looked to me when i just visited the dealer that there was a good 5mm still left) but the dealer has said that they want to change the front discs too. They look fine and I dont have the mm thickness yet from the dealer, but does any know how often discs need changing?

All depends on driving style. I went through 2 complete sets in 26k (miles) when I had mine...others have reported better time between swaps. Fronts usually wear quicker than the rears, so dealer might not be far off but it's not unknown for service depts to want to change everything on your car of course The choice is yours at the end of the day....

I have had the car from 3000 miles and as far as i can recall yes, this is the first pad change. Its not the pads that I am questioning however. New discs at 38000miles????? |

just spoke to a few Range Rover dealers and the general opinion is that discs can go at this mileage so it is possible although seems odd that i am going to have to change discs every time with pads. they also said to always change the brake warning sensors at the same time.

Mine will need a change soon (pads and discs), I have now about 100,000 kms (60,000 mls), pads lasted about 40,000, discs are original.

To be honest there is no way discs & pads should need changing together. I'd normally not expect to change discs anymore than at every other pad change. HSE TD6 (Java Black/Ivory) 911GT3 (Guards Red, carbon interior) ElanSE (BRG) Panamera Turbo S Boxster S |

Discs wear out more these days because the pads contain no asbestos. The compounds used in the pads are more abrasive and as a result the disc takes more of a hammerring.

yikes - the wife has had an X5 now since Sept 2004. Done 70,000 miles on the same disks and only had one set of pads. i prefer my MY10 but it seems the X5 is much cheaper to maintain - especially given the ~18 month service intervals. |
