Irish Ferry Help Needed

Ok, i need some help,

I am planning a trip to Dublin from the Uk this summer, i would like to take the RRS as my final destination is a couple of hours southwest of Dublin, so i would need to catch a ferry

Does anybody know the best/shortest ferry route for taking a car? Overnight ferry not an option

I have looked at flying/hiring but i just wanted to explore both options

If you are Travelling from Yorkshire the your choices are probably either Liverpool - Dublin Approx 8 hours . Liverpool(Birkenhead) - Dublin Approx 7 Hours or if you want to drive further and sail less then there's holyhead in Wales which takes 3.5 hours to Dublin. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

The other option is Heysham - Douglas on the Isle of Man then onward to Dublin which would be the shortest drive but longest total journey time. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Went from Holyhead to Dublin on the Irsih Ferries high speed thingy in Summer 08 and although the trip was reasonably short neither my wife nor I were entirely comfortable on the crossings. It wasn't particularly rough out there but the 'ship' wallows in a rather odd fashion and we both found it quite unpleasant. Would not rush to Ireland again anyway but if we did certainly not via that route for preference. Gordon Kerr

Castle Durrow.

Well in that case, Hollyhead to Dublin / Dun Laoghaire depending on if you travel with Irish Ferries or Stena, would be your best bet, as it's a quick(ish) run down the motorway to Durrow. That said you have to get to Hollyhead first & then factor in the sailing time. So for speed of journey, I guess that flying / car rental is probably a better option.

Not sure where in East Yorkshire you are, but I go to a trade show in Hull every other year & we tend to use Ryanair (yuck!) to LBA. It's approx a 40min flight between LBA & DUB.

Ryanair isn't the best but for 40mins I put up with them when I pop over for a pint or 10 with Mrs NP

Associated with the Caravan Industry, but more on the periphery than in it Wink

Hull is certainly the epicentre of that industry all right.

I know it's a bit further from you, but Aer Lingus fly from MAN to DUB. Which is an altogether more civilised way to fly than Ryanair.

It's about the longest I'd put up with them too Sad But unfortunately it's the only option to LBA from DUB. Believe me, if there was another way, I would.

From the 28th of March , Aer Arann will fly the Doncaster route, on behalf of Aer Lingus.

So while you will book on the Aer Lingus website, you'll be flying on an Aer Arann aircraft. But that's perfectly fine, Aer Arann are a good little airline & certainly superior to Ryanair. (although just about anything is superior to Ryaniar)

Edit to add.....

It will more than likely be on a turbprop aircraft, such as this one......
