Australia 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
One of 2 Knocking Noises now fixed

I've posted on this thread about 4 times as my knocking saga has unfolded over the last year. I have a 2006 TDV6 with Dynamic Suspension so I do have the hydraulic knock (not a real issue for me). The other front suspension knock, which appears at speeds below 40kph on short sharp bumps in the road, was rreally annoying.

After 4 visits to Aussie Dealer Trivett at Alexandria I got told so much malarky I started to believe in elves at the bottom of the garden. They told me they replaced (whether they did or not I'll never know) bushes etc about 3-4 times and ball joints at least twice. Of course each time I went in they had never heard of such a problem before despite me telling them I knew at least 10 other owners who had the same problem who used the same dealer location and advising them of this site with over 10,000 comments on these issues. They also told me to expect to pay for wheel alignments at least 4 times each year!!

I wrote directly to the managing Director of Land Rover Australia and complained. A Land Rover engineer called me back as well as a customer service guy. The engineer said the problem was well known and a fix was also well known (pity no-one seemed to be telling Trivett at Alexandria). They advised visiting another dealer location, Trivett Parramatta. What a difference in attitude. The service manager there drove the car for about 15 seconds and picked 4 faults right away. They were excellent in every way. They replaced ball joints (newer design) and advised tie rod ends needed replacing.

I picked the car up, no difference, knocking still there. They advised to come back when tie rod ends were in stock about 2 weeks later. Service manager again drove the car and advised he still heard the noises. Tie rod ends were changed as well as steering rack...problem solved and 6000km later still excellent. What an amazing difference this fix has made. I was ready to have a jewish stocktake on the car...I'd had enough. Now, I'm loving it again.

Given the bad history here I wrote to the Land Rover customer service guy and asked for an indemnity in writing should the issues appear again within a short time frame. I did this as my warranty is about to expire and I don't see why I should have to pay for anything if this fix does not stick long term. He (as expected) was non committal, saying each issue would be handled on a case by case basis. So, I'm happy for now. Of course, no offer of compensation of any kind for all the crap and time wasted over the 7 return visits in less than 1 year. Also, the M.D. must be very busy and cannot talk with customers. Unbelievable really on a car worth close to $120K.

So, bottom line, stay away from Trivett at Alexandria. 2006 Black/Alpaca, Hi Ice, Dynamic Pack, 19" wheels, Clear Pack...

Did they make any changes with DR on facelifted 2010 RRS models?

I will wait for 6 months to see what people say. I heard that they were supposed to completely change the whole DR technology. I doubt it...

There are new underpinnings so I'm led to believe, BUT there have been a couple of reports already for knocking on MY10 cars. Watch this space...

Not posted for a while since my last visit to the dealership in June for the suspension knocking. Over the last 2 months this has got worse and worse and we'll be booking it in to the dealer in the New Year. Java Black, 20" rims, privacy glass, side steps, chrome mirrors, body coloured grill/vent surrounds/door handles, Brembo, towbar, fridge

some more news on this....

if you have 22" alloys (overfinch tigers in my case) or larger than the 20" wheel original supplied the dealer is unlikely to fix or replace the bushes to solve the knocking issues uner warranty....
Im not sure if this has aleways been the case but in the past my dealer was cool about it but recently when a new suspension knock issue reared its ugly head again i got a "unless the original wheels are on there we won't be able to help" they were suggesting the low profile tyres and larger rims putting extra force on the bushes.

They could be right of course but I don't believe that this is the problem.

you have been warned. Confused

Glad I found this forum before I purchased a new RRS V6 it has confirmed what I really new all along. but was hoping I would find otherwise, what a load of crap these cars still are,I bumped into a service manager at a range rover dealers who I know from when he was at a mercedes garage and he as good as told me not to get involved, inferring that Land Rover themselves are a crap company to buy from,so will not be buying.

Kenhard. It is people like you who know the price of everything and the value of fu** all. Go and buy a Merc. Or, I'll wager you really have a hankering for a BMW (if you can actually afford one) as you fit the stereotype. Me? Oh, I have a Merc and a BMW (both bought new) and other cars and bikes in my current collection. But when I read the kind of arrogant pampered crap that you have just written, I smile and think to myself, what a tosser. My RRS is superb and I am buying another new one. But then, I appreciate what the car is capable of. Sheep If you see a bandwagon - it's too late.....

reply to MUFFD I joined the forum hoping to hear good things about thr RRS as I love the car to drive and was seriously considering buying one,I was hoping to hear good things about the new model but it seems they are still unreliable and have all these problems, software, suspension knocks etc etc so it has confirmed what the LR service manager guy I know inferred,i.e. best left alone at present, moerover, know I know a complete and utter 'VERY NICE BLOKE' like you owns one I would not want to be even seen in one !! even if they were reliable and troublefree which obviously they are not and probably never will be.

Reply to sweetafton. I joined initially asking about reliability of the V62010MY.Nobody replied but reading about all the problems has turned me off of buying one.The truth hurts doesn't it? and people do not like being reminded they own a brand which is currently at No 1 in the unreliability chart (46% incident rate)(MB 26% and 10th)Your statement "all cars have a few problems" is correct of course but from what I have seen on this and other forums with regard to the Landrover product -it can hardly be called "a few".more an epidemic ! and Land Rover seem very bad at sorting problems out, which worries me more than the problems themselves.I know some people have no trouble or very little, but they seem to be in a very small minority.I am greatly dissapointed as I was hoping to hear the 2010MY V6 sport was reasonably reliable as I just loved driving the car when Marshalls loaned me one for a day. I think if it was more reliable it would be one of the very best all round cars available, certainly large FWD large SUV anyway.

Mecedes went from roll overs to take offs so they have had their fair share of problems earning their present position.

For the past 12 years I had 5 of Landrover products which have provided a multi purpose transport in comfort, style and not one has required more than routine maintance, which considering they have all been used in the mud is not bad. the last 2 years in a RRS.

In actual fact their is a Happy owners thread on this very forum.

Landrover do seem to make a few more "Friday cars" than some and in my mind the standard acroos the dealer network varies considerably, more so than other brands and seeems to of taken a turn for the worse when Ford took ownership. If you look through the problems bottom line is dealers make the difference between a good landrover and a bad one!
