Winches and more....

I understand from LR literature that various accessories for the Sport won't fit the SC. In particular the Raised Air Intake, Underbody Protection and the Winch mount. Why is this?

I know the Underbody Protection can be modified to work with the SC by drilling holes to allow air to reach the Intercooler, which I plan to do.

Basically, are there modifications to the RAI and Winch Mount that can be done to allow them to work also?

I've been assured by 2 seperate companies one in the UK and one in Germany that the RAI, from LR, does work with the SC. However, this is contrary to what LR says... Evil or Very Mad I have ordered the RAI from the UK on this premise, and should it not work will be getting a refund!

Any infomation on the RAI and Winch mount being fitted to a SC would be most welcome.

Thanks

Guy

If you fit the winch, the front bumper will need to be cut, which means you lose your front parking sensors. The other problem can be the ACC sensor which were removed from the G4 sports because of the locale of the winch setting it off. If this is disconnected you will then lose your cruise control.

As for the RAI I can only imagine that the restricted air flow through the tunnelling would be a problem on the S/C.

As for the front sump guard, I can't comment as I don't know where the oil cooler and air intake get their air flow from, but would imagine it can't be any much different from the 4.4 N/A.

Hope this helps. I've got a G4 RRS with all the kit so if you need to know anything else I'll do my best to help.

Graeme.

Thanks for the info Greame doesn't sound too bad, and do-able. Not really fussed about the ACC, so could disconnect that quiet happily.

I'm pretty sure the PDC central sensors in the centre could be relocated onto the winch mount so that they still function as normal, the the sensors on the corners shouldn't be effected as the mount shouldn't obstruct with their 'field' of operation...

With regards the RAI will need to look into that a bit more closely, maybe there's a loss of power due to the more restricted airflow... this could possibly be compensated, in part, by a free flow air filter in lieu of the OEM filter. Hmmm have to think about that.

Thanks again, sounds like you've got a very nice motor there!!!

Just checked I don't have ACC, only cruise control so should have no issues there either as the radar sensor isn't installed Razz

So only really leaves the question of whether the winch mount interferes with any SC specific components and of course the matter of airflow to the engine with the RAI Very Happy

Happy Days!!

I don't know the SC, but I'd guess that the RAI issue could be down to the fact that this model uses the air intake on each side of the car and the RAI is available only for the RHS. Question

VA had a winch fitted and had the front PDC. I think you will find also on the SC the LHS vent/intake is a dummy. The vent isn't difficult to remove so you could take them both off to see! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim,

Thanks for that. Had a quick nosy under the bonnet and the air intake runs through the RHS inner wing to the intake. and as you stated the LHS intake is in fact a dummy. Without removing it you can see it blanked off behind the grille.

This explains why its called a RAI not snorkel I presume, as the Air Filter Box only has a rubber seal where it enters the RHS inner wing and therefore not water tight. It could be made watertight, however, I presume, with a great deal of work.

Is VA's RRS a SC or something else? If its a SC then all good Razz . Otherwise still need to check whether the supports for the winch mount intfere with the intercool or anything else.

Cheers

Guy

Hi - Mine was a normal TDV6. The only reasons for not being able to fit a winch are, 1. your adaptive cruise control will have be disabled, and 2. your front parking sensors will need to be disabled. I got around the front parking senors by leaving them active and covering up the sensors with butyl tape - not ideal but seemed to work.

I'm not familiar with the SC intakes but as long as it's on the RHS I can see no problem, the G4 RRS in 2005 were the petrol RRS and they had them fitted. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

On my G4 RRS the ACC works (sadly) and the park sensors don't. It's in the dealers this week for some repairs, I've asked them to look at the park sensors to see if they can get them to work. Not holding my breath though Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.

Cheers for the info Guys!!

Well double checked my spec I definitely don't have ACC Razz it was a USD 2,000 option in 2006.

VA how does that work with the PDC, surely if you cover them up they will constantly sound? Eitherway I'll worry about that later.

Could anyone due me a huge favour and upload/pm or e-mail a photo of the underside of the winch mounting showing the mounts and where they go. I presume they go underneath the radiator and mount on the sub chassis somewhere. This is where there maybe a problem. Alternatively if somebody has the LR installation guide and could e-mail that to me that would be great. That should give me an idea where the installation clashes with the SC and not the 4.4 or diesels Very Happy

Thaks Guys

I only covered up the 2 redundant sensors and whilst occasionally I had problems with beeping mostly it worked well. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
