Worrying topic, I'd say ! I've got an old-style licence with A+E, so AIUI I don't need to pass the trailer test. How much can I tow a) as a personal thing and b) if it's for commercial purposes (own business) ? And it's the MAM of the trailer that counts (not the actual weight, even if it's full of feathers) ? |

I dont get them anymore but they are a godsend for quick (and important reference) Easy to use and understand!!
Official GVW for the RRS in tdv6 and tdv8 is 3175kg and for the S/C 3125kg. The trailer weight is placed against the unladen weight of the vehicle though and not the GVW for the train weight. That drops it to TDV6 2535, TDV8 2656 and S/C 2590 kgs. These figures are for the MY10 and will depend on the spec and extras fitted. A) As a personal thing, up to the vehicles unladen weight but best to stay within the 85% rule for safety. B) Thats what I think we're trying to find out here now even though the original thread was just for hiring a trailer to move a car!!!! James Towing commercially requires Tacho but you then mention local deliveries which IIRC might be exempt - not sure so don't quote me - will check into it but commercial regs are a mine field. Tandem Agree with some of your post but B+E license can tow the maximum permissable weight for that vehicle. An example given on the direct.gov site it gives the following for B+E license
Therefore I would suggest that a TDV6 RRS (2535kg including fuel) can tow a trailer upto its maximum permissable towing weight of 3500kgs. So long as you have the appropriate license. The caravan club suggest towing a caravan weighing only to 85% of the UVW of the towing vehicle, which in the case of a RRS could still be a 2 tonne trailer making a total train weight over 3.5 tonnes. Sorry 4wheeldriver posted at same time so missed your reply MY10 TDV6 HSE, Alaska White, Ebony with Contrast, Park Heat, Paddle Shift, Privacy, Heated Steering Wheel, Extended & Premium Leather, MY07 TDV6 HSE, Zermatt Silver, Gone ----------------------------- 1964 Austin Healey 3000 2007 LR Defender 2011 VW Tiguan R Line |

Thanks for your efforts so far - much appreciated. Is the gross plated weight the same as the GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight, presumably), stated previously to be 3175 for a TDV6 or TDV8 ? If so, then it looks like we're OK to use an RRS without a trailer for business. Unfortunately, I cannot get many big round bales of haylage in the back, and the animals would make a terrible mess of the leather (though I have carried a sickly alpaca in the boot before now ) |
