Rent a car trailer

Hi, does anyone know where in London I might be able to rent a trailer to carry a car behind the sport (ie the carried car would be either a old VW bettle or a new mini) ?

Also, does the quick release tow bar would be enough? Woudl I need the electrics as well? Range Rover Vogue ‘17 TDV6

Yellow pages - trailer rentals - look for the Indespension franchise - they build, rent and sell all kinds of trailers and fit towbars and are a nationwide franchise. Quick release tow hook would be OK and you would need to have single electrics for the trailer lights. Trailer centre would be best to advise you.

Yellow pages are also on-line at www.yell.com 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Yes the quick release towbar would be more than adequate and yes you would need electrics and trailer board. Towed our boat from Scotland with the Sport, weight of boat and trailer approx 2.7 tonnes.

Quite few seem to have done it themself, the only thing you will need is a £100 visit to the dealer (or get hold of an Autologic program) to enable the trailer lighting repeater icon on the dash IIRC. Trailer rental places can do it for you 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Towing hitch is up to the job no probs, not sure if some enablement is needed though on electrics as their is a saftey feature that will not allow height to be changed with trtailer attached

Also you need to be aware of the law especially as your car already weighs 2.7 tonnes Exclamation

If the train weight (ie the towing vehicle plus trailer plus load plus 1x 75kg for the driver) is over 3.5 tons you will need a tacho fitted.

If the unladdened trailer weighs any more than 1020kg then in addition you would need an Operators Licence as well.

Exclamation Landlord

You will be breaking the law towing that boat as any veh registered after 1st May 2006 must now have a digital tacho fitted and guess what, it is not possible as yet on the Disco 2 3 and RRS. Landrover are still working on it.

Electrics are a DIY certainly upto MY09, dash icon works and height adjusts - only SW issue i was informed of was mod to turn rear fogs off when electrics in - in case you were towing a caravan - in order to turn off the 'glare' of the fogs in the rear view mirror Thumbs Up

Have to disagree with your interpretation of the law. If above vehicle and trailer is used for private use in the UK then no Operators License required.

Furthermore no Tachograph is required in the UK for vehicle and trailer combo mentioned above as long as not for hire, reward or for carriage of goods for commercial gain.

Might be different in Europe.

Good source of info 'Towing and the Law' issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)

Software updates the reversing sensors to disable them when trailer attached. MY10 TDV6 HSE, Alaska White, Ebony with Contrast, Park Heat, Paddle Shift, Privacy, Heated Steering Wheel, Extended & Premium Leather,

The only laws that apply to this outfit is that "a perdon who first passed their test after 1st January 1997 is restricted to a combined Maximum Authorised Mass, (MAM) of 3500 kg.

That is the MAM of the trailer plus the Gross Vehicle Weight, (GVW). Also the trailer MAM must not exceed the UNLADEN weight of the towing vehicle."

"If this MAM is to be exceeded, an E test pass is required."

Quotes from the law books regarding this!

I'd say th boat on the back MAY be pushing the limits a bit depending on the UNLADEN weight of an RRS. (Haven't looked it up as its model dependant)

The Tacograph and 'O' licence are only required if the outfit is going to be used for either hire and reward or own account (I.e. delivering cars from your own dealership is "own account". Delivering for a 3rd party is hire and reward.)

Hope that clears it up a bit but as usual the laws are EEC so I've paired it back to the need to know! Current, M135i in Estoril Blue with more extras than the cast of Ben Hur.

Interesting point you,ve raised.

Handbook gives kerb weight with full tank as 2535kg, log book gives mass in service as 2610 with a max GVW as 3175. (The max GVW can be exceeded by 100kg when towing).

Will need to weigh the trailer and boat, fairly sure with no fuel it comes in under 2700kg. Must admit to not normaly using RRS for towing it, use the Defender which may be even worse if your interpretation of the law is correct ! MY10 TDV6 HSE, Alaska White, Ebony with Contrast, Park Heat, Paddle Shift, Privacy, Heated Steering Wheel, Extended & Premium Leather,

Its not my interpretation of it. I've quoted the imporatant bits and put them in caps as they're the relevant points.

It states categorically that its the unladen weight of the vehicle and not the laden weight.

I can scan in the various relevant passages and pages for you?

As for the licencing that's the relevant part when using it privately! The 750kg limit is for commercial use.

My own outfit weighs in with the Sport and caravan at approx 4100 kgs but I've never weighed it as I've kept my c+e current so I'm well covered!

Last summer there were a couple of big "operations" by police down the M5 targetted at people with illegal combinations! I believe they caught over 50! Hate to see it happen to a forum member too! Current, M135i in Estoril Blue with more extras than the cast of Ben Hur.
