United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
Impressive towing capability in an emergency

Last night in freezing fog and on a very icy country road, I came across a Freelander on its roof, blocking the road. Luckily and with the grace of god, the occupants, including a little boy managed to free themselves from the wreckage, a bit shocked but otherwise OK. The road was blocked and the positioning of the Freelander posed a real danger to anyone travelling on this road as it was on a blind bend. Some quick thinking, and out came my unused towbar and a rope. The RRS (in Low box) dragged the Freelander, still on its roof, with ease off the road, through a farmers gate and into a field. Bloody impressive. First attempt in normal box setting was a strain on the gearbox, but in the low box setting, the torque and grunt was quite something. Bow down If you see a bandwagon - it's too late.....

the one I have is yellow and it has shackle clips on either end. Can't remember where I bought it but it was certainly in a car accessory shop like Halfrauds or some such place. If you see a bandwagon - it's too late.....

If it is from a car accessory shop then I wouldn't use it to tow any Land Rover as it won't be strong enough. For about a tenner you can get a 3,4, 5 or 8m long nylon strops that have an eye in each end with an SWL of 10tonnes and come with a test certificate.
You can get them from any of the big names who supply bits for Land Rovers. These bits of yellow rope are only intended for towing a car not even a Freelander. If it carries away while you are towing then you could kill somebody with the crackback from them, or at the very least do a lot of damage to either the towed car or your own.
I offroad my Defender regularly and it makes me cringe when I see some of the bits of blue rope that look like they have been recovered from the motorway and punny shackles that people try to use for towing broken down Landies - or worse, using the same thing to recover a stuck one.

There is this for sale on eBay at the moment
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Emergency-Recovery-T...53da97e8c9

or even batter is this
http://www.cheviot4x4.com/shop/Products/Re...0shackles/

If you have an eye on one end and a tow hitch on your own car then you need only buy a single shackle too, but make sure the bow on it is large enough to also go over the towhitch as well as the pin not being too thick to go through the recovery eye on that is fitted behind the cover on the back over evry RRS and D3-D4

MuffD if you would like I can let you have a proper strop in exchange for the postage! Unfortunately I don't have any spare shackles 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Oh God, I can just hear the horrendous scrapping noise as the poor Freelander was dragged along the road on it's roof

I once did something similar - moved a couple of crashed motorbikes off the road as they were blocking the traffic and potentially the ambulances on the way to the injured - and could have caused another accident as they were on a corner.

When the police arrived I got a bit of a Censored though. Seems that having moved the bikes their accident survey team couldn't get the data they needed to establish how the crash had happened. Embarassed RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

Can recommend the above 'Handystraps' have used them a number of times as their local. Good service and the straps are tested and certified. Prices are also very reasonable. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Emergency-Recovery-T...19b332d3bb (15,000lbs is about 6.8 tonnes)

Also worth checking the price of their shackles http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SWL-4-75-tons-Galvan...53da1c5663 very cheap but again postage is expensive due to weight.

Might be worth a group buy as they will give good discounts. Think I paid about £2.50 for some 4.75 tonne shackles !

If anyone interested I can get prices. Postage is a pain but I am heading up to Midlands on Saturday for 4 days this week so can arrange to meet in the area. MY10 TDV6 HSE, Alaska White, Ebony with Contrast, Park Heat, Paddle Shift, Privacy, Heated Steering Wheel, Extended & Premium Leather,

There is also this guy if there are enough people interested in a group buy. He will practically make what ever you want although the price will depend on it being 1 of a kind or several. Have used the slings on this page for towing before. http://www.tonybeal.com/lift.htm Although the pic has closed loops at both ends there are different eyes and shackles that can be fitted. Current, M135i in Estoril Blue with more extras than the cast of Ben Hur.

There is always a 12tonne 5m strop under the back seat of my car and a selection of shackles in the boot, I also keep a small folding shovel under the seet too. I also carry a 12V compressor incase I have to adjust the tyre pressures. Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh
