Making speeding legal

In my Saab Aero Conv, i always was used to drive the speed displayed by my TOM TOM,
since this is much more accurate than the speedometer.

For example: max speed 120 km/h, i would maintain this speed as displayed on the TOM TOM,
with result that the speedometer indicated 128 km/h. This will give you an extra 8 km/h,
which saves you more than 1 hour on long trips for example from Amsterdam to Barcelona.
Of course, if you will add the legal required correction of 4 km/h (in case of a speeding ticket)
you can go as fast as 132 km/h (speedometer) legaly.

The question is: Is it possible to display the GPS speed on the RRS NAV display?

SW

I may be wrong, but I wouldn't risk fine/points based on the perceived accuracy of a high street bought GPS sat nav system Confused Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Any sat nav will be more accurate then the speedo since it measures speed as a rate of change of position taking its information from your movement rather than from the vehicle's transmission. If you are at a stabilised speed, the sat nav should be very accurate once it has settled. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

uhmmmm...so....is it?????????

(trust me, this calculation is watertight. And it is also confimed by the fact that Holland is equiped with radar detectors every 500 meters on the highway Wink .

No, the RRS satnav does not have that ability.

mmmm........interesting idea and a theory I've heard before.

But somehow you have to allow for the delay of the signal bouncing up to the satellite and back down again to your car. Occasionally blocked by an underpass or similar.
Personally I would stick to the reading the speedo gives you. Can't see any Court giving you leeway because your Tom Tom got it wrong. TDV6 - gone

I can't see any leniency from courts either. In fact, here in Melbourne there is a speed camera that keeps detecting all offenders at the same elevated speed yet police say its accurate. Several have tried to use the GPS argument and failed.

However, in the absence of bridges etc, a sustained GPS reading will be more accurate than a speedo as it measures rate of change of position. In my field of aviation, GPS is extremely accurate in termsof its speed and position functions. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

On long runs, you let the GPS settle down and stabilize the speed with the cruise control.

This way, any temporary obstruction of the GPS signal is of no influence.

And for the suspicious drivers, at the end, you still got the lagaly required correction (reduction) of 4 km/h in case of a,
unrealistic, speeding ticket.

The police is checking your speed with dopler radars, and each peace of this equipment has to be calibrated each year.
In case of a speeding ticket, it is standard procedure to request this calibration report from the police.

I don't understand that car manufacturers still use this very inacurate (upto 10% to high) and outdated method,
since there is already for many years more precise ways to measure distance traveled as function of time.
(thanks to the world of aviation and the military)

SW, if it's that important to you then just get your TomTom and stick it in the car. Seems a lot of fuss about nothing though if you ask me Smile I also don't believe that any court would listen to you if you said your GPS told you the correct speed.... in fact, if I was the judge I'd throw the book at you for trying to be a smartarse Wink

To be fair to SW's original point, it's a well documented point that most cars speedometers are inacurrate by around 5%. Although I understood this can be both over and understating the speed.

I also use an additional gps device in conjuntion to the speedo, however I don't rely on either as Gospel. As I don't know exactly how accurate either are.

On UK roads volume of traffic dictates choice of speed most of the time, so you don't always get the opportunity to put SW's recomendation into practice anyway.

I prefer to use the saftey camera warnings to assist me, and road conditions in knowing when I can break the limit. And then I'm well over the limit by both the speedo and the GPS measurement. Obviously the safety camera datbase isn't entirely reliable, so I am still risking detection by plod.

Worth remembering that although many speed limits seem inappropriate in many locations. In many they are particurlarly valid.
Remember a Speed Limit is just that a Limit - Not a Target. Wink

Finally I'm pretty neutral on Mirror Colour Coding, Chrome or Original. Wink

GPS certainly isn't gospel.. think what happens when you go up (or down) a hill

speedos are surely overstating speed to cover manufacturers from being 'blamed' when drivers are caught speeding?

and as for the OP, i wouldn't assume that all authorities add on a blanket xx% in terms of mph.. the traffic taliban in North Wales for example are almost certainly an exception

if you are driving such a long route that 1 or 2 mph really matters then i would focus more on the route (and in particular the traffic) than anything else. And take your number plates off (or replace with fakes) so you can't get caught.
