Sorry mate, I must have missed the previous bit... so what is your router doing, do you not provide service into your CAT5 network from the dispatcher? i.e. so service appears at all the wall sockets in your rooms as long as they are patched at the panel?

i dont get you - i will make a pic !

Nice Thumbs Up

Right... what you call the dispatcher, I call the patch panel Wink

So, if your cable modem can connect straight into your PC (presumably by the network port), can you not connect it straight into a port on your switch? As long as your cable modem routes traffic out to the ISP, you shouldn't need the router in line with the modem.

The router might be providing DHCP and wireless services but you don't need to get to the internet via the router for it to continue doing that - just connect it directly to the switch.

Well you forgot that each comp/PS3 has a MAC address and that you cant connect them to the internet without the router - the switch is ok for an internal network but when you want to go to the internet you need the router - correct me if i am wrong .... Confused

Trying not to muddy the waters but from reading the tread I think the questions are the following:

1) can you cable modem run a DHCP daemon to issue IP addresses to your local devices (PS3, computer, etc)
2) can your cable modem act as a gateway and route IP traffic from your Local Area Network (LAN) to the Internet.

If the answer is no to the second question a router is required - or a PC or LAN device acting as a router.
If the answer is no to one, but yes to second, you need to manually configure the IP stack for each LAN device.

With reference to the performance issue, check the router vendors site for steer on any firmware upgrades that might support the faster speed or know issues, if not then you will need to splash the cash.

Note: Open for challenge but on any LAN/WAN you never transmit/receive at full capacity. -----------------------------------------------------------------

No, you're right mate... thus my question about whether the cable modem can act as a router or not. If it does, let it do the routing and connect it straight to the switch. If it cannot route, you are right, you will need a separate router.

So that we can specify an appropriate router, what else does your router do?

- DHCP?
- Wireless?
