is that the Continental Sport Contact that is rubbish? They dont seem to be that badly rated online at a few sites (though that doesnt mean too much).

Is the preferred type the Pirelli Scorpion Zero?

Woka,

In a nutshell...... No! However.......................... If the supplying dealer has a stock vehicle with your preferred choice at the time of handover then I'm sure a swap could be arranged for a nominal fee (i.e. cost of swapping 8 tryes round).

I'm under the impression that rather than have all eggs in one basket, they will use a few different suppliers, that said, our showroom car and demo both have Conti's.

One to discuss nearer the time I think.

James Thumbs Up

8k and the wear was terrible.... LR quoted "its not a sports car and I must driving it round roundabouts to hard" Blow me thought it said "SPORT" on the back of the car and it was all four tyres, I stated I was not in the habit of going the wrong way at roundabouts!! By 12k on the inside tread the braid was coming through... done 22k on the Pirrellis with out issue

used to fitting Goodyear F1s on previous sports cars - so 8k wear rate is higher than usual for me Smile

I would have thought the soft compound of the Conti would give good grip for the S/C and probably the TDV8's torque too. Probably less of an issue on the TDV6 Question

The Continentals are fitted on the XC90s as standard and the wear there on 18" rims is atrocious. As Wokka says 6-8k and theyre having to be changed yet they persist with them. There are endless threads about it over there with the 4 wheel alignment having to be done every 6 months to try drag a bit more miles out of them. Current, M135i in Estoril Blue with more extras than the cast of Ben Hur.

Part of the problem I see is that from new, the shoulders of the tyre already have much reduced tread compared to rest of the tyre.

Continental claim this is to increase treadblock stability on a 2.7tonne 4x4.

In reality this leads to premature tyre wear on both shoulders of each tyre (In my opinion) Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Part of the problem is that many people don't keep an eye on the pressure of their tyres and so tend to get uneven and increased wear. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Fair point on tyre pressures VA.

Although since having mine on for 16 months and about 8k, the shoulders are well and truly shot.

And due to my car suffering from the steering shimmy issue, my car had the four wheel alignment, RFV wheel balancing and I monitored the pressures and tread depths fairly regularly. To no avail. Big Cry

Only other thing I can think of is hard cornering, this will generally lead to outer tread wear. And I have chucked mine about a fair bit. Whistle

O my TDV8 I usually keep my Contis pressure a bit higher than recommended, to avoid the "feature" I experinced on TDV6. So far 13000 Km and shoulders still look ok '08 RRS TDV8

Also keep mine a bit higher than normal too and the wear pattern looks ok so far.

At least they last a bit longer than the rear tyres on my MG where I'm luck to get 5k miles out of them ... and that was before I put the supercharger on the car Twisted Evil Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

So Flydrive and Alicatt,

What tyre pressures are you running on to improve the shoulder wear Question

I've been running the last two sets at F 33 R 36 psi as per the figures recommended by LR and I get premature outer shoulder wear PDQ Exclamation I also check the pressures weekly Exclamation

Having just put a set of tyres on I'm willing to try a bit more air. Generally only me in the car and occasionally my wife.

James,

Have you any thoughts/advice on this Question TDV6 - gone
TDV8 - gone

That's not good to hear. I have Goodyear Wranglers on my Disco3. 20k miles and not a scrap of wear seeing as I don't treat it like a 2.7t barge! So tye Pirellis are best? Will check out which ones I have. I personally don't expect to change gyres on a car sub 30k miles/3 yrs which is the shelf life of a car fir me. So I wouldn't be happy spending cash on gyres after less than a year. Anyone got a link to a related old thread? 2010MY Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE
