By the way I don't suppose you were on the M6 on Friday night near Crewe at about 17:00 were you Tim? A car very similar to yours with same grill and lights was sat in traffic just behind me before I left the motorway. I doubt, Tim or Andy can go that speed with their vehicles... @Tim: What I always wanted to ask: How long does it take to fill the fuel and how much does that cost if it wa completely empty? The total FUEL oil capacity of my current ship is 11,000 tonnes - that is High Sulpher Heavy Oil, Low Sulpher Heavy Fuel, High Sulpher Gas Oil, Low Sulpher Gas oil. Our Gas Oil is a bit like Cnetral heating/ "diesel" oil. In addition we have 290 tonnes of various lube oils. We never do a completely empty to completely full type fill up - we have to have a fuel reserve of 8 days worth at full speed of HSHFO and 4 days of LSHFO, we rarely burn the HS/LSGO as it is very expensive but we are required to burn it in some ports like Rotterdam where we have to run our generators on LSGO to reduce the emissions. So ......................... time to fill up? A normal fill-up for us about 9500 tonnes HSHFO @ $350 a tonne and that will take us from North Europe to Japan/China and back to Europe without needing a refill. The HS/LSGO can be a problem as it isn't widely available outside North Europe so we usually only top up enough to see us out of the region when we will change over to HSHFO for the rest of the voyage until we return to North Europe. If we also do a call in California during the voyage then we have to bunker yet another even lower sulphur content grade of heavy fuel, because California has to do their own thing! Time to bunker - depends on if we get the superbarge in Rotterdam or not. If no superbarge then the various grades come by different barges and it can take the whole port stay (18-24 hours) to load the stem of fuel and lube oils. The superbarge carries about 15,000 tonnes of High and Low sulphur in one lift and can bunker all the grades simultaneously through different hoselines. We can do 9500tonnes in 5-6hours if the barge has heated the fuel to about 90C, any cooler then it takes longer................................ also if it comes onboard that hot then because the fuel expands as it gets warmer we cannot fill to 100%. When the Chief engineer works out his bunker request he always works to 92% or 95%(depends on the CEO) of tankage capacity to allow for hot opil taking up more space than cold oil. Next variable is that when working out the fuel stem the CEO cannot mix HFO taken at different times or ports as there can be chemical reaction between similar fuels that renders them unburnable and also we NEVER (except in an emergency) burn a fuel immediately after it has been taken onboard until a chemical analysis has been carried out on the fuel just taken. Another problem for the Chief Engineer is that different grades of fuel oil require him to use different lub-oils! So when we change over from HSHFO to LSHFO we also have to change over the luboil system to a different grade otherwise the engine and auxillary engines (we have 4 huge alternators that also run on the same fuel as the prime mover) can suffer severe damage. Bet you wish you had never asked! Oh and fuel consumption on HSHFO at full speed (26 knots at full loaded draft of 14.5m) )is 360 tonnes a day, at economical speed (22.5 knots) 200tpd, consumption is very variable, depending on weather/currents/condition of the underwater hull with regards to marine growth 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it 2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced 2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW Last edited by Tim in Scotland on Thu Aug 27 2009 9:40am.
