adaptive cruise control distance sensor disablement

funny thing happened during first service on my 07 RRS today. My adaptive cruise hasn't worked since I got it (car was 18 months old or so when I got it and don't use cruise much. When I did recently it worked just like normal cruise - the car ran at the set speed and approached closely car in front, (too closely actually) so I turned it off and thought, oh well, heres another thing for the garage to fix when it goes in for service.

Its in for service now and they say that its had a bump previously and the mounting bracket behind the bumper for adaptive cruise sensor is bent and the sensor is pointing down at 45 degrees, so it wasn't working - easily fixed. Given the interesting effect this has maybe it was bent on purpose - I don't know either way though.

The interesting bit is for those of you who posted on this site asking how to make adaptive cruise work like normal cruise - and as mine was doing exactly that by having sensor bracket bent - maybe thats an answer. I'll find out more from the garage when I get it back if anyone is interested. Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE, Buckingham Blue with Ebony Black

Couldn't you just tape or cover it over rather than bend it Question

Nope... it's radar, so you would have to use metal - and then it would probably bleep at you continuously and tell you to intervene or crash Rolling with laughter

fyi, I didn't bend it - it was done by the previous owner (which was land rover actually) and obscuring the sensor will just give false alarms of objects/cars too close. Whatever happened made the sensor think there was nothing ahead all the time nomatter how close you are to the car in front. Thats what it was doing when I drove it. I will let you know more in a few days when I get it back from garage. Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE, Buckingham Blue with Ebony Black

But if it was pointing down - surely it would sense the road ?

Anyway, I used the ACC most of the 500 motorway miles I drove this weekend. Having got the hang of this system now I think its a great piece of kit and wouldn't be without it. I imagine ACC will feature on every new car within the next 5 years.

Out of interest - if its radar why does a bit of snow on the front of the sensor render it inoperative - giving a "sensor blocked" warning message on the dash ? RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

update:

have now had my cruise distance sensor fixed (it does now sense cars ahead) and talked to the engineer who fixed it. Apparently the sensor bracket behind the black ACC cover in the bumper was bent and pointed the ACC module down at 45 degrees so it was always seeing the road.
Don't ask me why this allowed cruise to work and not detect a car ahead ever, but thats exactly what it was doing by pointing down at 45 degrees towards the road.
I could probably get the mechanic to mark up a diagram of exactly what bracket was bent. if anyone has a picture/diagram of whats behind the front bumper I can get a copy to him to mark up and post it here if anyone wants it.

Nothing was damaged or needed replacing to correct this, so presumably nothing was damaged making it like this in the first place either and all they had to do was disconnect things, bend the bracket back and re-initiaise the system - and charged me for labour of course Wink Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE, Buckingham Blue with Ebony Black

Perhaps the bracket is designed to bend relatively easily to give the sensor some protection as a new bracket is £8 and a new radar sensor is £1,614!

but this pic shows the unit in a different position to can be seen by looking at the front of the car in the flesh?

edit: which is basically exactly where those 2 red lines cross past the right hand side fog light

Quite agree - the parts diagram is misleading if you don't know where the radar sensor really is. Sometimes I wonder how the dealers' storekeepers ever find some of the parts we ask them for.

Speed control ecu - I think it's in the LH footwell behind the trim.
