Bit of an update on this one. My son has created a few basic websites now for school projects, he is now looking to get a bit more stylish with it and he is talking about Dreamweaver and Rapidweaver. The price of the first is a bit eye watering, is it worth learning the Rapidweaver and then teaching yourself the other? Does anyone have any experience of both, can a 9 year old learn them?

That is certainly one heck of a price difference! Martin you do web design would you say it is a more useful skill for him to learn DW rather than RW. What I don't want him to do is to buy the DW and find it is too far above him so that he has wasted his money. Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

I use Dreamweaver all day everyday..... I hadn`t heard about Rapidweaver before your post, it look a tad lite and a bit of a gimmick - but may be a good starter package ?(didnt look into it that deeply) ... but I would recommend him learning DW, it has been the industry standard for sometime now.

In the past I would set someone off learning to create pages with a clean table structure, but CSS (cascading style sheets) is now the thing to get his head around. Pages are quick and easy to put together and far easier to update once built.

What is the site url ? does it need hosting ?

micro$oft publisher can make basic web pages

and also they do Frontpage which is quite good of making site, as you just can put the text on the page and it does all the converting to HTML ect

aaaaarggghhh nooooooooooo not frontpage!!!! Stay away from frontpage Laughing

Thank god Dreamweaver has a handy feature to clean pages built in frontpage/word of all the Censored in the code!!

Try building a page old school and use notepad, atleast you can guarantee a tight clean code!

I recommend your son also starts using Firefox too - there are a few nice addons like 'edit css' etc that allow you to change values and see the site change instantly - its a great way to learn quickly as you can do it on any site - even rrsport

Thumbs Up yup a great addon!

(also worth using firefox to preview your pages, as all browsers are not created equal!!! and something that works in one, may not work in the other Evil or Very Mad .... but tell him he`s lucky as he doesnt have to worry about making the sites compatible with the 640 x 480 screen resolution anymore!!!!!!!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad )

Cheers Andrew, my concern is that DW is too complicated and puts him off. He has used a site called Dave's Site to start and Father Christmas bought him HTML for dummies which covers off HTML, XHTML and CSS (sounds like I know what I'm talking about!)

The sites he has made have just been for school projects and haven't gone on line. The basic stuff he does off pat, if it is a bit more complicated he goes back to his notes. When he first started I wanted him to understand what was happening and how it actually worked rather than relying on a wysiwyg editor, which is why I thought ow he might be ready to use one that lets him look at the code but is quicker to work with.

The attraction of Rapidweaver was that it looked quite simple, but was more flexible than say iweb that comes on the mac. What I am frightened of if DW being so difficult that it turns him off as he is only 9. Is DW something a kid can use and grow into (bearing in mind I probably won't be much use to him) over time or is it difficult to learn in the first place?

Kaine Safari has this feature, not that I've ever used it so cheers for the tip off Thumbs Up (Saw one of your Mytreg stickers at the weekend!)

Cheers Woody I'll have a look. Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

DW has quite a steep learning curve but once learnt it's the most powerful web design tool available and well worth the investment. While it's what I use for page design I tend to favour other editors for writing code. But P Jr will need to walk before he can run Thumbs Up
