should dealers charge for courtesy vehicles?

i have never had to pay for a courtesy vehicle when having warranty work performed.. after all its not my fault that the car needs work done to it. This has held true for over a decade and at more than a handful (20+) of dealerships/marques.

Recently on a warranty trip to Stratstones I was required to pay £20+VAT to borrow a Censored volvo while work was carried out on the RRS (work which didnt even work and will require me going back to them).

Does anyone else think this a complete Censored take?

It is only some dealers that will charge you for a courtesy car (Stratstone is one of them) but the majority doesn't... Thumbs Up

what ever the reason/justification/policy stealers should distinguish between accident/repair/service customers and warranty work customers.. one lot are there by choice, the other lot aren't

I agree 100% that there is no way on earth you should have to pay for a courtesy car when it is warranty work which is being carried out as it clearly is through no fault of your own.

Then again, courtesy cars don't even exist here so stop moaning and count yourself lucky! Laughing Wink Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

If your tv breaks down would expect a replacement? Or your washing machine?

Let's get real....cars develop faults and whether you've paid 10k for a Fiat or 120k for a Bentley you just have to accept that unless the dealer actually built the car then it's down to the manufacturers.

So if you had paid 120k for a Bentley and the dealer said ok, that'll be 100quid for a courtesy car you would find that acceptable?

I don't think so.

The manufacturer should work with the dealer in covering the cost or supplying the courtesy car.

The dealer takes a profit from selling cars produced by the manufacturer.

You do not deal directly with the manufacturer.

When the product (car) goes wrong it is for the dealer to liase with the manufacturer whilst minimising the inconvenience and cost to the customer.

The customer is not in the wrong for a car going wrong, the manufacturer is.

The dealer is the intermediary.

Why should we be inconvenienced? Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Got to my dealer who had organized a loaner for me. On handing over the keys for a Freeloader wanted £23.00 for one days use. Didn't warn me beforehand.

I asked if it was for insurance as we have a fleet policy that would have covered the car. It wasn't - it was 'company policy'.

They wouldn't budge but offered to run me home and return the car after the service, which I accepted.......that probably cost them more than a car standing idle.

That's why I will end up moving to another dealer, they think that customer service is all about them! .

There is absolutely no substitute for a genuine lack of preparation.

It seems to be something that's happening more and more often... I've never been asked to pay for a courtesy car. Maybe if dealers are starting to charge for them, they shouldn't be called courtesy cars any more and the question should be "would you like to hire a car for the day?"

They could use that to their benefit actually... you could pay £10 to take a Defender for the day, £15 for a FL2, £20 for a RRS and £25 for a FFRR. They'd obviously still have to pay you to take a D3 Whistle Wink

If I took the poxymobile into a dealer for service and had the option of paying £20 for a day's use of say an M5 Whistle I would jump at it Thumbs Up

The answer to the question is NO.

However I have had to pay £10 or £15 before insurance with BMW etc, with LR I have twice had a courtesy carand both times I sign something saying it will cost me £10 but then both times they havent actually charged it.
