England 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Fuji White
Tow Bar

Guys - I know there will be dozens of posts on here but the search facility does me every time so thought I'd add a new post!

I may need to go down to Abergavenny on the 6th April to pick up a horse - it won't fit in the back of the car so I will be borrowing a trailer...I haven't, as yet got a tow bar to attach it to the car with.

I may never need to use it again - is it worth getting one fitted? Is all of the connectivity for electrics etc already in there and it just needs setting up or is it a big job? Could I even borrow someone elses and just stick it on mine??

Questions, questions

Can anyone out there help? I guess this is kind of urgent as I'll need to get it booked in to the stealers if there's no way round it.

Cheers

It's easy to borrow a tow bar since it's removable but the electrics are a different matter, they would not be a ten minute job to lend out.

If you are not likely to use them again it would be much easier to find a car to borrow for the day, perhaps from the owner of the horse box you will be using.

Agreed, surely whoever you're picking the horse up for doesn't expect you to go out and equip your car at your own time/cost simply for the purposes of doing it? Confused

Alternatively, get pubic transport down there and then ride the horse back! Thumbs Up

both fair points gentlemen - I think you have answered my query - it's stealer or borrow someone elses car!

Any other comments will be appreciated but thanks for your support.

More seriously - towbar - borrow or ebay - electrics hardware around £75 and a DIY hour job, stealer around £300....

Pop the panel off above the tow bar socket to see if they are fitted now - poss if preowned....

Good timing

The tow bar is the same one as fits the Disco

I bought one on Ebay for £160 delivered second hand
It looks like it has never been used
They cost approx £350 from a dealer

The electrics are currently awkward to get due to the official supplier going bust
Twin N and S are unobtainable
Part number YWJ500150 ish

A chat with Nick at Yeovil LR (search him) reveals what I actually needed was YMJ500160 - or near enough
I have a modern european trailer to connect up
The twin N and S is a UK anachronism - bless us - however the rest of the planet have been using a single 13 pin plug like my trailer for aeons thus the 160 is all you need
Cost was about 80 quid or so delivered

Note the dealers will give you conflicting advice on what you need
My trailer and a modern caravan (yeah right Rolling with laughter ) use 13 pin so the 160 is all i need and in stock as an official LR part

I fitted it tonight
If Id have done it in daylight it would have taken less time Big Cry
The total job to fit the electric kit took me about an hour in crappy light
You need a screwdriver and a choice selection of swear words for removing the rear light cluster
It is not rocket science

To conclude:

In order to tow a trailer legally you need a cheap s/h towbar from a Disco (better availability) and an £80 electric pack plus an hour of your life plus a good selection of swear words as well as a dealer who knows what they are talking about

Cheers

MOR

If you think you aren't going to need the towbar again why not hire a tow car for a couple of days - there is a network of specialist 4x4 hire companies across the UK who rent out Land Rovers for just this sort of thing. Look in your yellow pages in the car hire or commercial vehicle hire sections - might be your opportunity to be White Van Man for a weekend! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
