Agree! Had a bum clenching 40min flight a few years back. That, combined with choppy water outside the reef when we landed.... took me the first week of our holiday to unclench my sphincter!!! Shocked Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Wales 2006 Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE Java Black

Just back from Vegas. Heard about this from a friend who knew I worked there and was concerned. It is the Hibernia field where I work and it is one of the choppers I regularly fly on. Haven't heard the names of the casualties yet, so I don't know if any of my friends were amongst them. The field is currently in a shut down mode, and so they would have been flying extra construction workers offshore for the shutdown work.
Thankfully for me, it's another bullet I've dodged, but the guys on board that one were not so fortunate.
This is the real price of oil and energy.

@oilman:
Sorry to hear that. Sad I'm glad you personally weren't affected though. It's always sad when something like that happens and of course it's even worse when it happens to people "near" you. I really do hope this will have been the last crash.

Thanks for the concern guys - nice!!!!!
Just heard from Canada... it was most probably a main gearbox failure which gives very little opportunity for a controlled ditching. Nobody on board I knew. Only two passengers were for the Hibernia field, the rest were for the White Rose FPSO nearby - it was a shared flight.
One survivor still critical in hospital, but expected to survive - amazingly!

I'm off back out there on Tuesday but won't be flying offshore until April 1st. Shocked Might go by boat!

I work for Sikorsky.

Please be careful about generic terms like "failure" of the MGB. There are likely many causal factors at work leading to this unfortunate and sad accident. It will be some time before all the facts are known. I have no reason to doubt the continued safe operation of the S-92 in all environments. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

BKHK, I agree about the speculations before the investigation is over.

Anyway, it seems that the investigators found a broken stud related to the main gearbox oil filter system, that could lead to loss of oil pressure and subsequent MGB failure. It also seems that those parts were subject to a voluntary safety alert by Sikorsky, calling for the replacement of titanium studs with steel ones.

There are talks about a temporary grounding of the S-92 fleet. '08 RRS TDV8

Sorry BKHK - didn't mean to cause any controversy by my speculation. Humble apologies.
There are many redundant systems in helicopters, but the MGB is not included. I was merely pointing out that the most likely cause of a catastrophic failure such as this is probably related to the MGB.

Agreed, the full investigation will almost certainly get to the root cause. Time will tell.

I'm in St. John's now and the Cougar fleet is grounded, so we are doing all our offshore transfers by boat. This may continue for some time.

Sad times out here just now.
