End of the TDV8?

Talking to 7 gentlemen from Land Rover this week. Subject turned to the fantastic performance of the TDV8 and why would anyone want to buy a petrol RR anymore. Then the bombshell was dropped!

The insider information is the 5 litre S/C is to replace the 4.2 (which we already knew). BUT the new 3.0 TD6 is to replace the TDV8 as it is considerably more powerful and more economical.

The LR guys said the replacment engines were for both the Sport and FFRR and were prinicpally because the existing engines were Ford and a non GM engine needed to be sourced.

My reaction was what no V8 diesel. Resounding NO not even for the FFRR.

Perhaps I was being spun a line, but my instinct was not. Further, the new FFRR is to be built on the Discovery 3 floorpan as is a Defender replacement. Also told New FFRR for 2010.

Very interesting as the LR dealers here did not say anything about this when i was thinking of chopping the 6 pot in for an 8 last month, perhaps they just do not know yet. Does anyone know what it will mean price wise, will there be 2 engine configurations in terms of BHP output and respective pricing to match, will they continue with the 2.7 as well ?

Any of my fellow Poms in OZ heard anything about it from their local dealers ?? Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

Production of the current TDV8 will stop shortly. Ford will build another TDV8 (about 1L bigger, due to start 2010), but I don't know whether Tata will buy it.

The 3.0 TDV6 has more power, less emissions and less weight than the current TDV8. The TDV6 and TDV8 are all built on the same line, so it's not a loss of production - in fact production becomes easier.

Production of the 2.7 will slow, but I've heard will still be supplied to non-european markets..... A D3 not in drag....

DS cheers, just wondering whether the new 3.0 TDv6 will be a step change price hike from the existing 2.7 , or whether they will the use output to control the price on specific variations, there are no s, se or hse models in OZ, its based upon the type of engine basically which determines price and standard goodies.

The gentlemen I spoke to specifically said the 3.0 TDV6 was to replace the 2.7 and 3.6, any power variations were to be via single or twin turbo. BUT then they could be telling porkers! Sheep having a good laugh and waiting to see how long their BS takes to appear on a forum!

The 3.0 is to replace the 2.7 in Europe as the 3.0 is EU5 compliant and the 2.7 is not. Obviously EU compliant is not an Austrailian requirement Wink I have heard the 2.7 will continue in Oz for a while - maybe a low cost option (or more likely the 3.0 will be a high cost option Rolling Eyes)

The 3.6 TDV8 will be phased out as the 3.0 makes it redundant. A new TDV8 (around 4.4/4.6) will be built, but this is a Ford engine so may not reach LR.

To the best of my knowledge, all 3.0 TDV6 are twin turbo. There are two power specs, but I believe these are differences in engine mapping. A D3 not in drag....

My stealer stands by the fact that there will be a larger TDv8.. He also stated that the 2.7 would continue alongside the new 3.0..

It's just all too confusing..... Evil or Very Mad Rolling with laughter
