R - you should check whether your county council publishes its "definitive map" on-line. If it does, it is easy to locate byways open to all traffic (BOATS) in your area. It is harder to identify "white roads" which are also known as Unclassified Country Roads as, rather bizzarely, the definitive map doesn't need to show "highways" it just must show footpaths, bridleways and byways.
