R - you should check whether your county council publishes its "definitive map" on-line. If it does, it is easy to locate byways open to all traffic (BOATS) in your area. It is harder to identify "white roads" which are also known as Unclassified Country Roads as, rather bizzarely, the definitive map doesn't need to show "highways" it just must show footpaths, bridleways and byways.

An example is Northumberland County Councils whose online definitive maps is shown here:

Modern editions of your local ordinance survey maps Landranger series may also show local green lanes - usually shown with small red dots or dashes with bulges on them.

You can also try Wayfinder which purports to identify all "green lanes" in the UK. Personally I have never been able to get this to work but I think that may be because I use AOL as an ISP.

The best idea is to find someone who already goes greenlaning in your local area and then tag along with them. Ideally you should always drive in pairs on a greenlane.

Oh and the RRS is very good at greenlaning, although over grown bushes can scratch paint work which can cramp your style somewhat. RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini
