Alloy cleaning.....recommendations (for those of us who DIY)

Has anyone got any advice on the best way to clean brakedust and general crap off the RRS alloys?

I have always used Wonderwheels to clear the majority of the muck off and then polished with Mer Alloy polish. This has worked well on the less fiddly alloys on my other cars but the RRS seems to be a magnet for brake dust which just seems to burn into position!

Does anyone have a recommendation or advice - what works for you? (and dont tell me to get someone in to clean it....!!!!) RRS TDV6 SE Java Black +towpack +tintent +Permagrin

What a difference between this and my old Disco3

i am sure JKP (site sponsor) on disco3 will have some advice and a discount for products in his shop

If your already using wonder wheels, which is very acidic and it not budging, you might be better getting a automotive clay bar, these come in different grades from fine to course.

I asked my dealer as they changed my pads and from there they was really burnt on brake dust, they said they used Autoglym Acid wheel cleaner, but since the car was in again, they cleaned them for me, not perfect but i still have my own elbow grease to use)

Once you get them to a decent cleanliness, a good alloy sealant might protect them, just wash with shampoo then as the WW acid would strip it straight off

is it as good as they say on baked on brake dust?

I used P21s Gel, which is non acidic and that has a good rep, but has done nothing to the baked on dust, Tried Tardis Tar remover, to check that it wasn't tar aswell

I can't honestly say as I've only been using it on my new wheels from day one of ownership, as I'm trying to avoid the baked on brake dust. But it does have a lot of good reviews and came highly recommended from my wheel supplier.

I also use a rim wax to seal the wheels afterwards. TDV6 - gone

I always seal after too, but have had to seal over the top of the really baked on dust Sad

I think its going to be a case of getting some Billberrys, a agressive clay bar and take the wheels off the car for better access Confused

I use poorboys wheel sealer, find it to be quite good

The DW forum guy recommend 2 thin layers, buffing it in between each lat=yer

I have also read some recommened a layer of a hard wearing wax, on top of this too, My hard wearing wax of choice is Collinite 476s, which i use as a wax on the paintwork too, 2 layers is supposed to last around 6-8months and leaves it with a great gloss afterwards

Sealing and/or waxing the wheel should then just need a wash with your normal shampoo, using billberry or similar will strip the sealent off, which would then require another seal etc

I never wash my car myself. I asked because i have a set of rims lying around ready to go onto the car.

So is there no point in doing this if im just going to go to the hand car wash a few days later? (they use autoglym products Whistle ). I know them very well so can tell them not to use that wheel spray. Will the dirt come off with just a jetwash? WINNER - 2008 Best All New Photograph

I've just ordered some Bilberry and Chemical Guys wheel guard and will report back when I've had chance to give them a try.Although the wheels are much better than they were I've still got lots of small black, sort of pitted dots I'm hoping it will dissolve and the seal will help prevent a re-occurence. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.
