Tailgate Opening

For some strange reason my tailgate opened slightly without any reason and the warning light on the dash is advising that the tailgate is open and the car wont lock.

I have tried to open the tailgate in order to close it properly however it seems stuck. Not too sure if it's the upper winder or the actual tailgate but now the vehicle is unlockable.

Is this a common fault on the RRS ? (2006, 2.7TDV6). IS it the lock or faulty mechanism ?

I know on my old Audi the passenger door lock did this and Audi knew it was a common occurence and replaced the mechanism.

I think it has opened on its own a few times over the last few months.

Any suggestions are gratefully accepted.

First I've heard about this. Can you push firmly down to close? 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Tried that and you can tell its open slightly but wont close.

There is nothing in the boot either so its not as though somethign is trapping the lock etc.

Very strange. Its only happened a couple of times when my wife has been driving along in it and it just pops open slightly !!

Think I will run it into the dealers and see what they can find.

Is there a by-pass so that the rest of the car can be locked ?

No there's no by-pass. Try opening the other half of the boot. (Just interested to see what happens.) A trip to LR service centre is the best thing to do. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

How did you try to open the boot to lock it the keyfob or button on the tailgate?

I seem to recall similar on my last RRS - it 'half' catches and then is stuck between wanting to be open and closed - i recall the button on the tailgate doesn't play but the keyfob button does it (assuming the spare fob button is programmed to the boot) - I also found that it is easy to open the boot in error by inadvertantly pressing the spare keyfob button....

Hope that makes sense - Confused

Ah well not to worry I will try to get to the LR centre and get it checked out.

Once I get home I will try to open it with a little force but the top part wont open as I think it recognises that the bottom is not closed.

I am not with the vehicle at the moment as my wife has it. She rang me to tell me of the problem.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Did you try the Master Lock/Unlock on the dash?

Press the Unlock button to unlock all the doors.
Press both the Unlock and Lock buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to release the whole tailgate. Malaysia Boleh!

in my case, it turned out that i was shutting the door too hard.
(well it's a pretty heavy door to begin with, you know.)

Appreciate all this info, will give the wife a call at lunch to try the 'master switch' solution.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks again for both the knowledge and speed of response which is extremely helpful. Thumbs Up
