At first I thought Autocar were pulling an early April Fool........... but not so when you read the item in the mag. It is a "computer enhanced" picture (ie they have made it up!) and I agree it looks like one of those radio controlled toy cars photographed close up! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Problem is, Porsche seem to listen to these so-called 'Brand Gurus'. Their view is that the Porsche brand will stand this expansion from what they do best - Sportscars (See Butt-ugly Cayenne)

They also keep telling them they can expand upwards AND downwards in price scale (See Boxster, Cayman)

This could also going to lead to an 'Affordable Porsche for the masses' as Porsche only survived going pop by doing this.

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea. I don't believe this mass marketing of premium brands is a good idead.

Merc tried it with the A class and in order to make the project, and business profitable they cut corners on quality which damamged their once peerless reputation for build quality and durability.

Supertrotter - the thing that wrecked the A class more than anything else was Mercedes UK desire for market share............... and entering into a deal with Stellios Hajianou that dumped 1000's of used A classes onto the 2nd hand market every 3-4 months. It wasn't just the A class that suffered poor quality contorl and inferior construction that did so much harm to Mercedes reputation.......... the M class nearly did that single handedly for Merc. A Mercedes built in the USA, by Amercian labour, to American standards and with Amercian made parts.................. you would have thought they might have done better research and then they would have found that most Europeans don't want to buy American cars........ for very good reasons. At least BMW managed to maintain the quality of their two US built cars - the Z3 and the X5, but I recall the motoring press here slagging both of those off for not being to BM's usual quality standards with the early ones.

Sorry if this upsets our American readers............. but most of you seem to be buyers of European motors intsead of Ameriacn made products 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim, my point was not very clearly made.

I meant ALL Mercs suffered as a result of cost cutting/profit chasing.

I used to have a C320 which was bloody shocking!

Got to say tho', new ML is a damn good car Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Chylsers merger/takeover of mercedes benz caused all this cost cutting.
Although they are sorting things back out at Mercedes Benz, i still find the dealer network to be shockingly bad, and the cars aren't that much better. I.e. R class.. rebadged Chysler!? Plus not making the ML a 7 seater, forcing people with old 7 seater Ml's to go towards other marques or make do with the odd looking R class.

We used to have an S class W140 model - the big barges, and some people say that this was the last bullet proof merc, but it was terrible as well, it had so many electrical faults, that we had to threaten legal action when the boot started popping open when we were driving along. This led to a Merc tech group taking the merc apart on our office car park, but they found nothing wrong with it!! so we gave up and sold the damn thing.
Yes may have been a lemon model, but still we lost faith in the brand as to what is supposed to be the flag ship model causing us so much grief.

Makes the problems with the RRS seem trivial, thats why it hasnt bothered me too much compared to the mess we got into with Merc back then.

We are apprehensive in buying another merc, and have been with Bmw ever since, but it appears Bmw confidence and dealer network is growing complacent as well.. There was an article last night in my local rag, that Bmw are not doing very well and confidence in the brand is at an all time low, despite higher sales this year. Lexus are storming ahead with top customer satisfaction scores. If toyota plough loads of money into the Lexus brand for the Uk and Europe im sure they could take over big style.

But they keep making silly errors and being too behind the market. I.e. only just released a diesel and that being the IS220d only available in Manual.. LS430 and Gs cars still don't look as good as the european models and residuals aren't as strong. We had an IS200 SE old shape for three years, and never had one thing go wrong with it, not even a glitch, never saw inside of a dealership apart from routine servicing. They should make use of their Hybrid technology and bring it out big style, as they are so far ahead of the competition in this respect. I would definitely buy an RX hybrid, if it didn't look like such a pants car compared to the RRS.
