It all depends on funds for a lot of people I suspect... most people can't afford to run more than one car so when kids come along you have to change your M3/RS4/Gallardo for something a bit more family friendly... This is where the RRS comes in normally, so you're half way to having a family already Jay!

You mention Lexus, my mate rejected 2 of the big saloons, one was investigated by Lexus for 6 months whilst trying to sort it out. I also know of BMWs that have had bad leaks, Audis where the screens leaked. It seems no brand is immune. IMO it is the dealer that makes the difference. Get a good one who looks after you and hang on to them. |

There's a lot of chat on the Porsche forums about this. Porsche remains a premium brand. You still can't get into a new Porsche for less than about 35k. What they don't seem to be doing yet is taking the brand down market. It's inconceivable a "piglet" would cost less than a Boxster. Contrary to what most think Porsche has always had cheaper models 924's & 944's. What has happened is the market for premium brands has grown & Porsche are after a bigger share of that market. The Boxster kept the company independent, the Cayenne has made it the most profitable car company in the world. The brand is undoubtably losing it exclusivity, residuals are not what they used to be. Porsche could not retain it's independence without the volumes it now turns over and as long as it continues to build the more extreme machines like the GT2's, GT3's & RS derivatives they can do what they wish, provided the quality doesn't drop which it hasn't yet. In the current global car market there really is little place for the small independent. Interestingly Porsche are currently more likely to be doing the taking over in the future (VW/Audi) than being taken over. Yep 924's were, 944's less so. The 968 which was based on the 944 is now seen as a Porsche classic. I think the original 924 was priced at about the same level as a then base Mercedes which at current prices it would mean getting into a Porsched for about 21k. If anything Porsche has gone more upmarket. And this proves the point even more the brand wasn't devalued even with those! I think the standard 924 was about as quick as the current V6 Cayenne HSE TD6 (Java Black/Ivory) 911GT3 (Guards Red, carbon interior) ElanSE (BRG) Panamera Turbo S Boxster S |

I think the Porsche Cayenne is a beast of a car I drove the 450 hp version it's a monster. The shape is awful but the build quality was excellent. The Cayenne saved Porsche as an independent company and as you say it isn't cheap either. I have to say you can't beat the RRS at the moment for looks and this is important to me.I have not heard a bad comment about it. I'm afraid for me the Cayenne is just ugly. Though I did look at it because the price was tempting, until you realise that everything is an extra. So in the end to spec it up to RRS levels would have cost a small fortune TDV6 - gone

I think it's a real shame about the Cayenne. I also cannot get past it's looks. It's a great car but there's a number of reasons why I'd not buy one. I'd want to buy an S (meaning deadly fuel consumption), it doesn't have the right spec for the money and the looks just mean it's a nono. If I'd have liked the looks, I might even have considered putting up with the bad fuel economy... but 'twas not to be.
