No power + Black smoke?!

Good day all!

Anyone know what could cause a loss of power and lots of black smoke (which seems to be coming from one tail pipe) on a TDV8 with about 2000 miles on the clock?

Car was ok in the morning, but when started in the afternoon there was a lot of black smoke and no power. Engine also felt really rough - like a bus or lorry. Only warning light on is the engine warning light.

There is no such thing as LR Assist here - nearest dealer is across a border and 180 miles away.

Big Cry

Hi SSD,

It sounds like the classic symptoms of a sticking EGR valve. (you have 2 , one on each bank)

The egr valve gets clogged up with exhaust soot , quicker with poor quality fuel.

You can try switching off and restarting , several times if necessary , you should be able to get it to close again but it'l need cleaning or replacing eventually.
When you do get it runniing right , rev the t*ts off it to keep the valves hot and clean (tip from disco3 site).

keep us informed.

Thanks guys!!

I suspect it is the EGR - dieslel here is filthy. Managed to get a lift home and have left the car in a secure lock-up overnight, but will try to do what you said first thing in the morning when I get to the car.

I've been driving in stop-start traffic for the last few weeks, no long or fast runs so maybe that contributed. Anyway, I'll report back tomorrow.

Censored emissions equipment - all the fault of the greenies.

Good advice BigMart Bow down Bow down

All back to normal, had a local mechanic look for faultcodes using Autologic - only 1 code stored, will try and find out what it relates to. Will get it checked out properly nest week, when I should be able to get to the dealer.

Cheers!

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black

no idea really BUT something sprung to mind when i read this. My manual came with a page loose added to it about a regenerating partical filter or something. To clean it you had to drive at 30mph or something. Maybe with the dirty diesel its clogged?

Sorry bout the vagueness. Ill dig out the manual later if noone else knows what im on about Rolling Eyes .

The particulate filter behaves as you say.

We dont have particulate filters in the UK till 2009 my , I think.

His tdv8 is exibiting the egr symptoms , black smoke thru 1 exhaust pipe.......

classic.

Hi, I have wandered over from fullfat and was very interested to read this subject. I have 2008my TDV8 with a DPF filter. The updated way of cleaning it is to drive for 20 minutes keeping the revs above 2500rpm.
I have had the same problem as you SSD, but without the black smoke! Hope your dealers in East Africa are worth the effort. I've been to 5 different dealers in 3 countries and not one of them has yet been able to find out what it is! I'll mention the EGR valves when I next visit them, although I reckon my computer is the culprit!

Hi Kevin,

Welcome to RRSport , nice to welcome a visitor.

Your symptoms are getting more common with modern cars , unfortunately.

I sell automotive diagnostics and see this kind of thing every day.

Your computer is indeed causing the loss of power BUT...the computer makes decisions based on the 30++ sensors on the powertrain , air temp, airflow, load , throttle, speed, gear, steering wheel position , etc, etc.
and , of course feedback from things like the egr valves so the ecu knows the position of the valves.

Dealer will only act on fault code data and replace the offending part named...a very primitive and sometimes wrong thing to do , the fault codes are sometimes misleading and the cause of the problem is very different to the symptom.

It needs a more competent technician/engineer to asses all powertrain sensors firstly, the sensor may be reporting an incorrect value but not far enough out to give a fault code.
Airflow meters (in the intake pipework from the air cleaner) are famous for this.

The ecu (computer) may indeed be faulty but for every car I've seen with a faulty ecu , Ive seen 200+ cars with a sensor playing up.
Keep your fingers crossed it's the egr valves stuck shut (no smoke)

Good luck,
Keep us informed
